Any good alternatives to Handbrake for video conversion?

Post by Hawq »

Lately Handbrake seems to occasionally freeze my system up part way through a list of conversions at times requiring a non subtle & also non suitable use of the power button to switch off & on again. A shame really as when it works it is a very good video converter, anyone know of some other good ones that are free? Rebox is fine for x264 but it can shrink the files if they are massive, a combination of Rebox & Handbrake used to work for that until once Handbrake freaked out during some x246 shrinking now it seems to do it randomly duering conversions of x264 & x265, seems more comon on 264 so far though.
So if you guys have anything you use that can do the trick for converting & resizing I'm open to ideas, really dont like having to hit the off switch, might have to think about getting a new PC at this rate (current ones a but long in the tooth)

The other converter I use is Adobe, which isn't a great option.

Are you using the latest version of Handbrake? If you are, it might be worth trying an older version. If you aren't using the latest version, maybe upgrading will help.

It could be a hard drive issue too, are there other issues that your system is having?

I looked at the system requirements and saw a few things:

• Handbrake doesn't technically support Intel processors made before Skylake (6th Generation). If you have a Broadwell (5th generation) Intel CPU, that might be mucking things up.

• If you're running Windows 10 and a 12th generation (or newer) Intel CPU, set the power profile to High Performance.

I haven't tried converting anything for a while, so don't know what the latest and greatest converter is these days. I think I used VLC to convert something last time I tried.

Duh, I forgot about ffmpeg. There are a few GUIs for it, QWinFF looks good.

just tried ffmpeg with that QWinFF gui, cant get it to work at all after fiddling about it gets as far as converting then fails, the last time saying error -22, whatever that is a look around didnt turn up much info & Handbrake continues to be a lottery of somethimes working & other times killing Windows to the point of when I firn the monitor on after coming back its am emty creen & all I can do is power down, sometimes even needed the switch on the PC's psu to comepletely shup down before trying to do stuff again. God I wish I were dead so I didnt have this to deal with

well after much fiddling it converted 1 file then refuses to do any others using QWinFF, I did try clever FFmpeg GUI but cant find the option on that one to start the conversion after seting it ready to go, it stuidly seems to lack a nice big clear start button. So its currently rebox for anything in 264 but it may come out huge as it doesnt shrink things or a gamble as to wether my PC will crash or not with handbrake, wonder if going back to an older version may help

just started giving vlc a try, well it seems to go in real time with the video so if this first thing works it's gonna be a convert while I'm asleep or at work thing I think. Update attempt 1 output a .ts file, never come across that format before so converting that to mp4 see if it comes out OK then its more fiddling with vlc to try to get it to output in the selected .mp4 format, why camt things just work & be simple?

Why do you need to convert so many videos anyway? I haven’t had to use a video converter in ages now that practically everything is easily downloadable and most devices will read practically anything.

I imagine hawqs use case would be somewhere between mine (needing to make new things look good on somewhat older and smaller displays) and Calavera's (needing to make the most visually stunning thing ever made look good on the first CRT the American consumer ever got)

And while media players, and computers, and handhelds can play practically anything, even the best phones in the world can't play half the various videos I have in all the wacky formats of the 30 years I've been using computers, and Hawq has had longer using computers than me, so probably has formats I can't even imagine trying to get to work.

There are codec options after you've chosen what file you want to convert.

1/ Open VLC Player from the Start Menu
2/ In the menu bar click Media > Convert / Save
3/ Click the Add button and browse to the file you want to convert
4/ Click the Convert / Save button
5/ Under Destination click the Browse button and choose a location to save the file, and name the file.
6/ Under Profile choose Video -H.264 + MP3 (MP4)
7/ Click the Start button
8/ VLC should now convert the file
9/ Once converted try playing the file to ensure video and audio display correctly

I did find the option for outputting .mp4 late on in the evening yesterday, set 3 roughlt 25 minutes shows to coonvert & went to watch Deadpool & Wolverine, do some gaming & watch Raw, several hours later checked before going to bed & it had managed to get through 1 file & about a quarter through the second. This morning it took over 2 hours for 1 file on the setting that would spit out .ts, yesterday that one went in realtime of the video, vlc is a terrible converter & slower than a dead dog
