Panzer Dragoon Saga

Post by Calavera »

Who here has played it? Is it as good as everyone makes it out to be? I started it once wayyy back in the day, probably 2002 or so. I had a copied version that I got from a program called "Edonkey". Also back then I had dial-up and it took sooo long to finally download it. I didn't get very far into it and I don't really remember much about it from the part I played. I remember making it to a town and that is about it.

It is really a shame they released it for Saturn and didn't move it to the Dreamcast like they did with Shenmue. If it had came out for Dreamcast it might be remembered as one of the best games for the system. Even though Shenmue has kind of a small following I think we can agree that it is fairly popular. Back in the day playing the original Shenmue through my VGA box was amazing! Had Sega went ahead and released it on the Saturn I think it would be just as forgotten as Panzer Dragoon Saga is.

Imo Shenmue still looks pretty good, especially the PC version released a few years back. Even though it is over 23 years old it still looks good enough where it can be played and enjoyed. 32-bit games on the other hand have held up terribly. Sure that Shenmue Saturn footage is impressive for the Saturn but it would be horrible to play now. 16-bit and 2D 32-bit games hold up fine but 32-bit 3D is pretty awful to play now. Playing them on an emulator at a higher resolution helps some but they still look pretty rough.

It's a good game, but not a great game. It's more well known these days for being rare and expensive than for it's gameplay.

A port to the Dreamcast would have been nice. A port to PC would have been good as well, because then they could do a remaster of it.

I might go back and play again one day.

Here's a 4+ hour video about PDS. 4+ hours!

I loved it, but the ending kept it from being one of the greatest all time RPG's.

It's hands down the best game I've played on Saturn (I'm up over 100 games on the system at this point)

Overall it was absolutely fucking amazing aside from going up and down the tower and the ending.

After I played it once, I played it again to see all the stuff I missed and get a better score at the end.

Panzer Dragoon Saga got runner up in my Retro game of the year last year.
(Only old games I've never played before are considered for the award)

Here's what I wrote at the time:
"BCV: Battle Construction Vehicles on PS2 my Retro Game of the year.
And give the runner up for NEW old game I've played this year (I'm not counting replays, of which there were LOTS) to Panzer Dragoon Saga.
For a game that turns a quarter of a century old next month, and for me, someone who could count how many RPG's I considered great on 1 hand untill I played this, I think I can issue no higher praise to a game.
I've always loved the series, and wasn't sure how an RPG of a great rail shooter series would work. The answer is AMAZINGLY well. I had a LOT of fun playing this game, I just have to ignore the ending and remind myself that it's the journey and not the destination. Ignoring the ending, it's better than Secret of Mana, Final Fantasy 7, AND Grandia 2. With the ending, it's not quite as good as any of my favourites.
It's like they watched the original ending to Neon Genesis Evangelion and thought.. you know this metaphysical abstract ending in the main characters mind that makes no fucking sense whatsoever? Lets end our game more fucking weird and making even less sense than that. It could have been a translation thing, but I don't think so. The more I try to understand the ending, the less I do, just like good Japanese media should be"

So yes, I very much Like Panzer Dragoon Saga. And after I was finished with it, I made a rip of all the discs and sold it for roughly what I paid for it.

I have the copy should I ever play it again but I'm getting back into the Dreamcast.

I like that it was a Saturn game, the Saturn needed a killer app. And Panzer Dragoon Saga IS that killer app, if it came out on the Dreamcast it would be just another Dreamcast game, because the system had so many fucking amazing games, but because it's on the Saturn it makes the console that much better with its presence.
