I've had my 290X since around 2012-2013 so 6 or 7 years. It still runs new games pretty good since I'm only playing at 1080p. Just wondering if there is any fairly cheap card out there that would be a significant upgrade to the 290X. I will only be playing at 1080p so it doesn't need to be anything insane. Another thing is I'm also still running an Intel i5-3570k @4.2Ghz, so would a more powerful card be bottlenecked by my CPU? It still seems to run everything pretty decent but there are a few things here and there where an upgrade would help.
So my questions are what card would you reccomend or should I focus on upgrading the CPU/Mobo/Ram first? And if I should focus on that, what would you recommend for that? I haven't been keeping up on PC components so I'm a bit out of the loop when it comes to current parts.
Any decent cheap video cards to upgrade from a 290X?

The AMD RX 580 and Nvidia GTX 1060 show up often on /r/buildapcsales as good GPUs for 1080p. If you have a bigger budget, it might be worth looking a beefier card so you don't have to upgrade as soon.
It looks like your CPU is LGA 1155, which doesn't have much for upgrades. If you're willing to switch, AMD has some great Ryzen CPUs on the AM4 chipset. If you do end up wanting more power, it does seem that they'll be sticking with that chipset for a while. An Intel LGA 1151 setup is still a recommended setup, too: https://pcpartpicker.com/guide/s77Ycf/m ... ming-build
What aspects of the games are looking to upgrade? If it's resolution and graphic effects like anti-aliasing, a GPU upgrade could hold you over for another year or two. But if you're running into general slowdown, your CPU might not be enough for the newer physics engines and such.
Either way, I'd buy the GPU first and give it a shot. You're going to upgrade that anyway, so there's no harm in seeing if that CPU will work a while longer. If you don't see a performance boost, I'd keep an eye out for a good motherboard/CPU combo sale.

It’s really hard to make recommendations when you haven’t told us your budget. What’s the max you are looking to spend on upgrades?

Grab a used 1070.
They’re about $350 AUD USED atm.
Best thing worth buying right now.
Will shit on the 290x and doesn’t cost the 4 bajillion dollars an entry level 20 series costs.
1070 will keep you going at full HD comfortably for a long time, and even does pretty decent 1440P if you want to upgrade too.
Cpu should be ok for a while yet.
Don’t bother with any card but a 1070 right now. If you can wait 6 months you should be able to pick up an rx580 for basically nothing.

You’re in the problem zone for cheap.
The current cheap cards are not much better than the 290x (another year or so for that to finally happen)
And for a sizeable upgrade, current cards (Vega56+ 2060+) are way to expensive.
