ian wrote: Tue Jun 20, 2023 2:22 pm Winter has hit Melbourne! I've gone from a light t-shirt, light shorts and bare feet in the house to a long sleeve shirt, my worn out thin as a tissue track pants, and socks!

it's 11°C at 2PM.

I am officially old because I used to live in thongs, a shirt and shorts at any temperature above 4 and only considered less than 4 a bit nippy.

Looking forward to going up the mountains this year, though. Gonna try and get some new boots, gloves and a jacket tomorrow.

Winter hit a week or so ago with an Arctic blast of cold.
Today I'm calling it, Winter is here! This morning my cars window was frozen over so I had to wait for the heater to melt it.

Last year I did go up the mountains and it's occurred to me why Melbourne winters are so shit. You get the bone chilling freezing, but never the god damn snow to play in or look at. :angryevil:

Up the mountains it's just as cold, but everything looks beautiful, people are happy (because they're on holiday or making a shit tonne of money OFF the people on holiday) and all around it isn't as bad.

Back to the mountains for me this year, even if I'll just be in a lodge drinking coke and coffee all day everyday looking out at the wonder.

Just once I'd like 8 foot of snow in Melbourne so I have an excuse not to leave the house!

The snow sounds amazing till you have it all the time. Having to clear it each time it snows is awful.

Let's swap! I wouldn't clear it, I'd just leave it.
My house could be buried under 40 feet and it would be great. As long as the power and or gas didn't go out. Even if the pipes froze I'd be mostly ok.

on the plus side, it freezes all the annoying bugs to death!

Yeah then the township gives you a bunch of fines. One time a cop yelled at me because the fire hydrant wasn't dug out. I was in the middles of digging it out. He actually slowed me down while I was doing it.

Really? You have to let things get pretty damn bad here before most councils even send you a warning for anything. We don't have snow, but like if your grass is 6 foot tall for 6 months or if you have a 10 foot tall 30 foot wide pile of asbestos riddled building rubble on your front lawn or you've left 1-5 unregistered cars parked out the front for a year you'll get a notice to clear it before they fine you... In another 6 months. :olol:

When you shovel snow is it like the movies where you just shovel it off to the sides of drives and paths? Or into the street where a plow comes along and takes care of it? Or is there more to it than that?

If I had a lot of snow to clear I'd become a total pyromaniac, we can't really use fire to solve our problems here (in fact fire causes a lot of problems for us usually) but with a lot of snow I imagine it would be a nice easy way to take care of it.

The old PCs can probably dried out and fixed.

The PC game boxes are probably done for though.
