Watching the Olympics, I giggle at one of the US interviewers for NBC named Steve Corino. The real Steve Corino would try to finger the winner's anus, so it's good it isn't him.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - A week before it is scheduled to be sold, Gawker Media Group might be working toward a resolution with a longtime nemesis.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the company is "engaged in preliminary talks" with Hulk Hogan regarding a settlement over the $140.1 million invasion of privacy judgment that was awarded to the former professional wrestler earlier this year.

That judgment is what drove the company toward Chapter 11 bankruptcy and an auction that is scheduled for next week.

The impending sale marks the end of an era for Denton, who founded Gawker Media 14 years ago. Since then, the company's properties -- Deadspin, Jezebel and Gawker.com, among others -- have been the home of some of the most respected (and controversial) writers on the internet.

Gawker's era of independence had already come to an end in January, when Denton sold a minority stake in the company to Columbus Nova Technology Partners as an extra layer of protection against the Hogan lawsuit.

But next week's auction still carries a sense of finality that has not been lost on Denton or his staff.

Gawker Media writers have declared the next five days to be "senior week," and will celebrate the company's run with special stories and reminiscences.

On Wednesday, Denton will host "a celebration of 14 years of independent journalism" at Gawker's headquarters in Manhattan.

"Our own narrative has been a Gawker story in itself: dramatic, and public," Denton said in the party's invitation.

Neither Denton nor a representative for Hogan responded to multiple requests for comment.

If the reports of a potential settlement are true, the timing might suggest that Gawker is trying to clean up its books ahead of next week's sale. As part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing earlier this summer, Gawker will be sold in a court-administered auction next week.

Digital publisher Ziff Davis submitted the opening bid for Gawker and its assets, setting the floor for the auction at $90 million.

In a statement Sunday night, Gawker seemed to downplay the significance of the latest reports, noting that the two sides have previously tried -- at times at the behest of a judge -- to reach a settlement, but to no avail.

"We've been hearing these rumblings many times over the years when the judge ordered settlement discussions, and you know where we are now despite that," the company said.

Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, sued Gawker in 2012 after the company's flagship site published a portion of a video showing the wrestler having sex.

The two sides went to trial in March; it ended with a jury in St. Petersburg, Florida, awarding Hogan $140.1 million for economic and emotional damages.

The jury found Denton personally liable for $10 million, and the judgment forced the company to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in June. Denton himself filed for bankruptcy protection last week after he was denied in his efforts to stay the staggering judgment.

Looming over the saga is Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel, who revealed in May that he has funded Hogan's lawsuit against Gawker, along with other suits.

Thiel, who has been the subject of unflattering coverage by Gawker's family of sites for years, described his legal crusade as a matter of "specific deterrence."

"I saw Gawker pioneer a unique and incredibly damaging way of getting attention by bullying people even when there was no connection with the public interest," Thiel told the New York Times.

Thiel's involvement in the litigation suggests that perhaps he, and not Hogan, is the most relevant player in any settlement negotiation.

In an interview on CNBC last week, Denton declined to say whether he has had any recent discussions with Thiel.

"If I had, I couldn't say," Denton said.

-- According to MMA insider Front Row Brian, CM Punk and Colt Cabana are no longer friends, and the two former WWE talents are no longer following each other on Twitter.

Brian notes, in the Tweets below, that Cabana apparently attended a WWE Raw taping, and went backstage and took photos with people, which angered CM Punk as he is amidst a defamation lawsuit with WWE Dr. Chris Amann.

For those who don’t remember, back in February 2015, Amann filed a defamation of character lawsuit against both CM Punk and Colt Cabana, stemming from comments the two made on an episode of Cabana’s “Art of Wrestling” podcast.

Punk reportedly feels Cabana attending a WWE Raw event and going backstage and taking photos hurts Punk’s defense in the case, and Cabana’s actions have apparently cost him his friendship with Punk. As noted, Dr. Chris Amann is seeking $1 million in compensatory damages as well as an undetermined amount of punitive damages in the lawsuit.

Punk is an idiot. If Colt became a patient of the doctor, that would be one thing. What does him visiting the place he used to work for matter? He was there visiting friends, not hanging out with Vince and Stephanie.

I guess he thinks he doesn't need him since he has his new MMA buddies, but they won't last once he's cut from UFC.

Colt hasn't said anything about it on Twitter yet. Maybe he's saving it for a podcast.

I thought Colt and Punk were super BFFs at one point. From what I've heard they weren't the best of buddies before Colt turned up backstage at a WWE show. Maybe Punks distancing himself from the biz, although I assume he's still buddies with Joe. Ironic really as somewhere down the line I think if the MMA thing don't work out he will back in the wrestling biz. Not necessarily with WWE but maybe in Japan or back in ROH. I've been watching the Evolution of Punk thing and he' kinda polarizes opinion, on one hand when he's meeting with fans and a make a wish recipient he seems like a cool guy yet when you hear stories like him falling out with Colt you have a different viewpoint. Nonetheless, as a long time MMA fan I'm one of those who don't fall into the anti-Punk category. I'd like to see him win actually and we see a super fight like against McGregor. He went up to 170 to fight Nate and Punks fighting at 185 so maybe try could do a catch weight fight. For the trash talking alone it would be worth it.

Punk seems like an okay guy. He's just not phony, so if he's in a bad mood when he meets fans or doesn't like somebody he works with he makes it clear.

But he's being ridiculous if the Colt story is true. If he's telling the truth that he had staph and WWE and their doctors said deal with it, I doubt a judge or jury is going to throw that evidence aside because his friend was backstage at a WWE show a few hours.

Punk has said many times that loyalty means everything to him. Why didn't Cabana just meet up with his friends after the show? Clearly, it will have no bearing on the lawsuit but it is a very tacky thing to do given the situation. Cabana probably thinks the lawsuit is a joke but then again he doesn't have a million dollars at risk. Also, I doubt it was just this one incident that ended their friendship (if this twitter rumor is even true).

And keep in mind Dave is a year or so younger than my parents and doesn't take roids. He has good genetics (well, not hair so much anymore, but he did have a glorious mullet once.)

Wrestling Legend Scott Hall -- Booted from Airport Bar for Calling Bartender a Bitch

ONE DRINK TOO MANY?

Pro wrestler Scott Hall was disqualified from a T.G.I. Friday's for being drunk, rowdy and disrespectful to the bartender.

A witness tells us Hall was at the Friday's in the Atlanta airport on Saturday ... drinking Coors Lights and tequila shots. He allegedly hit on the bartender and called her a bitch, and that's when trouble started brewing with the bartender's father ... who was at the bar.

We're told Hall didn't believe the guy was really her dad, and a manager stepped in and asked him to leave -- when he refused, someone called cops.

Law enforcement sources tell us officers responded to the intoxicated person call. They recognized Hall as his former wrestling alter ego, Razor Ramon ... shook his hand and calmed the situation. You can see in the video though, Scott didn't want to give up his beer easily.

We're told Scott left without further incident and no police report was filed.

Hall has a history with booze and drug abuse, but has said he's been sober recently. We've reached out to his rep.

We wish to extend our best wishes to the former NWA and ECW World Champion and WWE Hall of Famer Terry Funk.

He had to end up leaving Saturday night’s House Of Hardcore show in Philadelphia after he felt dizzy. He was going to be in Tommy Dreamer's corner during the main event.

Tommy Dreamer has said that Terry has been dealing with serious health issues. He also probably should have not flown out to the show as he was advised not to by doctors. He told the House of Hardcore fans at the 2300/ECW Arena that this might be his final night in that arena, and he didn’t want to leave the ring, but he wanted to say farewell to the “greatest fans in the world.”

Fans who attended have gotten the impression this maybe his final retirement speech. The reaction was amazing from the crowd and the fans in attendance were sitting crying with Tommy Dreamer. Best wishes, and get well soon Terry Funk.
