Sorry sir, the most I can take is $5 in change!

Post by ian »

I wasn't being a dick, I wasn't trying to pay for $100 of petrol in 5 cent pieces, I wasn't the first in a line of 10 people. I was the only person in store.
It was 2 am and I wanted a pack of smokes. I wanted to pay $14.50 in 50 cent pieces and $4 in 20's
Is that unreasonable? Can places legally refuse payment?

New guy at 7 11, said he wasn't allowed to take more than $5 in change... I've never had that happen there EVER before.. Maybe it's because he can't count $18.50 in coins..

I am tempted to go back with ALL my change.. FILL the car up with petrol and the jerry cans, and the lawn mower, and then be a dick and pay in a collection of of 5 and 10 cent pieces. at 8 in the morning... BE a REAL cock about it, would they still refuse payment then??

I am pretty sure that not only are they allowed to accept change, but legally have to right?

At my old job we refused at about $20.00 or more. I think a business can choose to do so if they want but I don't know if there's a set limit they can refuse.

When I bought my first motorbike I paid in $50 notes but the final $100 or so was in gold and silver coins. The woman taking the payment was pissed! They could have refused it if they wanted to, but they wanted the sale.

The rule is actually pretty simple: up to $5 in total for coins smaller than 50 cents, and not exceeding 10 times the face value for coins worth more than that.

And

According to the Currency Act 1965 (section 16) coins are legal tender for payment of amounts which are limited as follows:
- not exceeding 20c if 1c and/or 2c coins are offered (these coins have been withdrawn from circulation, but are still legaltender);
- not exceeding $5 if any combination of 5c, 10c, 20c and 50c coins offered; and
- not exceeding 10 times the face value of the coin if $1 or $2 coins are offered

Maybe you've just been lucky in the past if no one has ever questioned it.

With most of the 711 staff, they're pretty used to me doing weird shit at all hours.. They don't question when I rock up at 3 am to buy smokes with spare change, then again 4 hours later and get full tanks of petrol and enough food and drink to last a week :olol:
It's normal to see me buy $5 of petrol in the morning, then another 50 in the afternoon.

with most of the staff there's a degree of give and take as well. They wipe off a a buck here and there on petrol, I give them a buck here and there on drinks etc. They give me cheap doughnuts before the new ones come in, I buy them a can of coke sometimes.

I think it's just cause this guy is new and doesn't know how to treat a regular. I'll certainly have words with kamaal (No idea if that's the right spelling) about the new guy.

Because the guy is following the Currency Act? OH NO! Just pay with real money. Take your shrapnel to a bank where it belongs.

If banks were 24 hours I would..

Every shop should be 24 hours.. It's like it's the stone age still.

People say that but they won't accept the fact that costs/fees would sky rocket to cover employees at all ridiculous hours of the night.

I've worked customer service for over 13 years. 2 take away points are a) customers are rarely right b) they want all the service in the world but won't accept the cost that comes with it.

Hey.. 7 11 stays open 24 hours, and before I sent myself bankrupt I was happy to pay a premium on everything for the convenience..

If I could get computer parts or alcohol at 3 in the morning, bet your ass I'd be happy to pay an excess.

1 person wanting it won't justify a PC store being open 24/7.

Im sure the first shop ever to open 24 hours had the same thought. it's thinking like that that keeps mankind held back!

I'll go build my own store! With blackjack and hookers.

Convenience stores and servos don't count. Plus we're not counting those ridiculous 24 hour stores in America where they pay their staff peanuts.

YES! I'll make a Crown Casino in the north east suburbs..
A casino where you can also buy computer parts.

A 24 hour computer shop would make a killing.. EVERY nerd has wanted some sort of cable after the shops have closed and didn't want to wait so they could keep working on their project.
