only skipped through bits of the trailer when I stuck it in the trailer thread yesterday but as soon as the bank robbery bit came I knew I was going to like it, the spirit lives on

Re: The Naked Gun (2025)
I'm looking forward to it, but trying not to get my hopes up.
My only concern is that without ZAZ, as well as Pat Proft it won't be as funny.
But Liam Neeson and Danny Huston are both serious enough to be brilliantly funny and if the film sucks I am sure they can both carry it.

As a guy who is quite fond of the past I don't like when they do this. You can't revive an 80s franchise and have it be anything like the original. Remember ALF? I'm a big fan of ALF, I think the series was great. Do I want them to make new episodes of ALF? Hell no!

9 days away for us (8 if people are village VIP's, which I am not)
I have high hopes, but if it's crap, I won't be too upset, I'm gonna go with some friends simply for nostalgia reasons.

I appreciate that the runtime is just a little over an hour. With that kind of runtime, it won’t wear out it’s welcome if it’s good and won’t waste much of my time if it’s bad.ian wrote: Fri Aug 01, 2025 1:41 am 9 days away for us (8 if people are village VIP's, which I am not)

I don't think I've ever factored run time into any movie before seeing it, but that is a good point... 2 hours would probably be a bit much for something like this.
Occasionally I have factored in run time mid movie where it's been 8 hours and I need a piss... Or all my drink is gone and I'm crunching unpopped popcorn kernels and checking the time every 5 minutes.

My guy, my entire movie viewing experience completely revolves around runtimes. I factor it with every movie I watch along with Metacritic reviews, basically taking the score and subtracting 10 points for every hour beyond the first one. You tell me your movie is an 83% Metacritic score and runs 3 hours? That’s a 63 right there, waste of my time. But Naked Gun has a 77% score and only runs an hour and change? Fuck man, might as well be a 90.ian wrote: Fri Aug 01, 2025 10:43 am I don't think I've ever factored run time into any movie before seeing it
Barbie and Oppenheimer released the same weekend. Barbie has an 80 and is shy of 2 hour runtime? Respectable. Oppenheimer is a 90 but clocks 3 fucking hours? You know which movie got my eyeballs.
Lord of the Rings in theaters? Yeah, sorry, too long. Lord of the Rings Extended Version with the Blu-Rays that split each movie onto 2 disks? Well shit man, all I see is 6 movies that clock under 2 hours each, which means they are absolute cinema.

I guess the movie being good or bad does get exacerbated by the run time. I'll sit and watch 9 hours of good star wars (Andor, original movies) without blinking, and I liked the first of the Lord of rings movies, but then each one got longer and fucking longer with less happening and more walking, and then they split the Hobbit (which was a tiny fucking book compared to lord of the rings) into 3 movies and I was done before watching even the first one.
I guess that's what made the Irishman with its seemingly 8 hour runtime simply fucking painful and Megalopolis where nothing fucking happens at all for a bit over 2 hours simply meh.
But I'm not usually one to try movies I'm not interested in in the first place. I mainly stay in my lane of things that make me laugh.. I'll watch any given comedy and not care how long it goes for if it's amusing me.

Re: The Naked Gun (2025)
So I’m back from seeing it. And while I don’t feel my time was wasted, I’m not sure I would watch this again. The comedy is there, but it’s mixed in with a plot that is way more James Bond than a simple detective movie. The scope of the threat is too epic, the bad guy is too ‘evil villain’, and the whole plot is just a little too serious for a Naked Gun movie. There are fantastic parts, believe me, and I think you should still watch it. But this movie would have benefitted from a simpler story.

The Naked Gun has gotten good reviews, but it hasn't done so well at the US box office.

Re: The Naked Gun (2025)
I've now watched it, it was funny but...
I think Melancholy is right about the plot being too heavy.
The movie seems to suffer an identity crisis and doesn't know if it wants to be Naked Gun, or James Bond, or Austin Powers...
When it's being naked gun, it does a very good job. Just a bit of stupid fun. But there's points where I almost forgot what I was watching when Danny Huston was on screen.
He's much more suited to being a bad guy in serious roles, and is simply too big a straight man for Neesons comedy potential to really match.
Loved seeing and hearing Pamela Anderson in a comedy again, I feel like I haven't seen/heard from her since Stacked/Stripperella and a few comedy roasts here and there, so it was a highlight.
But the biggest and best cameo is clear. The whole movie I was hoping one person would have at least a single scene, and he did and I was over the moon! You'll just have to watch it to see what I mean.
I'll watch it again because I'm sure there's sight gags I missed, including in the end credits. But everyone else in the cinema missed the after credits scene.. I got rewarded.
A great time, if a little confused about what it was aiming for.
