I'm paying A$90. I just checked, I could be getting way more speed for not much more.

Re: Who here has the slowest internet?
I'm on a 100mbps connection. It's realistically a 150mbps connection most of the time, but they sell it on typical peak evening speeds. It's $99 a month and has a phone,VOIP phone, modem and Netflix included.
I am glad they all finally did away with data limits and shaping, and peak and off peak usage, and uploads and downloads usage... Now it's all sort of just here's all the internet you need: go.
Most of the time my desktop with ethernet will be around 120-150, wireless PCs are usually 90-120, and my phone at the opposite end of the house gets 60-70 (which is still ample for a phone)
After years of me telling various ISP's to check the exchange, pits and the lines between my house and the exchange, and them saying the 4 FUCKING Kbps was working perfectly and I should try turning my modem off and on again, I only signed up for a wired connection again this year after I noticed the NBN crew was out down the street in the pit for a few days in about January (and went for no lock in contract of course)
Low and behold, when the flooded pit had its 150 year old rusted iron wires, and flooded coke cans with fucking string replaced with non fucked brand new fibre and coax, everything somehow magically works as it should... It was only about a fucking decade of ever degrading speed and reliability before someone thought to check and fix what I'd been fucking telling them from the fucking start. Fucking idiots.
If I hadn't seen 3 NBN vans down there for multiple days I wouldn't have even bothered trying to sign up for another wired connection, and continued to use 5G as a primary internet connection.
So after a decade of mediocre home connections, I finally got a decent one... Just in time for me to lose interest in being at computers all day and engage in a bunch of other hobbies, interests and activities!
I sure would have appreciated even a reliable unlimited 24mbps from 2014 to 2023 though...

Re: Who here has the slowest internet?
And as a further update to the mobile speeds, I've been on Vodafone 4G and now 5G for some time now. They actually have reliable coverage in my area now. Telstra was faster (about double the speed, actually) when it actually got a signal... But so many more drop outs than you would believe. A few years ago Telstra actually DOWNgraded my block to 3G only on their coverage map.
They actually let me out of a contract when I could prove that the 4G signal in my area had gotten so bad I was spending about 60% of the time on 3G. They sent someone to investigate, and let me off the contract without a single issue, I'll actually be happy to try Telstra again in the future if they get reliable 5G in my area.
Vodafone got good right as Telstra (and Optus) were falling in holes with reliability.
From 2009 when I took vodafone to god damn court to get out of a contract which they refused to cancel and simply couldn't supply an even remotely usable service anywhere in Metro Melbourne (a tribunal, not a full proper court with judges and witness stands, and juries and lawyers and OBJECTIONS! Let's talk to the D.A. about extenuating circumstances etc etc... it was actually very boring, small, simple and quick once the whole process had to get that far) I just wanted out of the remainder of the contract, because it didn't work anywhere outside of each Vodafone store...I ended up getting half the money I had already paid returned as well as the contract voided. I could have gotten all my money back if I'd started collecting evidence that their service was totally not fit for purpose from day 1, but I only started collecting evidence after 3 months of shit.. Live and learn.
They have gotten worlds ahead in my area. Even on prepaid I'm getting a good 20-50mbps at any given time I'm out of the house, and the uptime has to be at 99.99% it's been pretty good as everytime I'm out and want to use my phone, I actually can!

Re: Who here has the slowest internet?
Based on that conversion for 300, that's not too bad for a good provider here. That pricing for the 150 isn't too bad either. Based on USD > AUD conversion, there's not a huge difference between the us. Mine just happens to be a really cheap provider, but their service has been fine. You can get more expensive if you want to pay for local support and what notmelancholy wrote: Mon Dec 02, 2024 10:03 pm $56 after taxes and fees for the 150. I was paying $74 for 300.
ian the govt made a fucking mess of our NBN. Since buying a house with gigabit fibre, it's amazing. It should have been this way from the start. The alternative solution would have been FTTC, run fibre down the streets then copper from the curb. It's much easier upgrading FTTC to FTTP than anything else. Back at my old house I had over 1km of copper from my house to the node. Walking distance following the roads was more like 500m, it looped back on itself because it went down the road, had to go right for some reason to the end of that street, then looped back to the other end of the same street. I was PISSED

I don't mind mobile data, but in my house it's only a couple hundred Mbps. Plus I want to be more in control of my connection than mobile lets me. If it was less restrictive I would have looked at mobile options a long time ago

I will be posting a new speed test tomorrow when my new router arrives. Get ready!
I'm actually getting about 250mbps now, but the old router TPG gave me 4 years ago (TP-Link Archer C1200) can't get to a gigabit.

It's been OK but it's not built for speed.

Since people are talking about their provided equipment, I should note that this is the price if you buy your own router and modem. Comcast provided equipment costs an extra $5/mo.Skynet wrote: Tue Dec 03, 2024 6:51 pmBased on that conversion for 300, that's not too bad for a good provider here. $70/month for 1000/350 cable (includes $8 for a modem rental). Gigabit should be $110/month but there's a price war going on with a new fiber company in the neighborhood.
I'm sticking with the legacy cable company because they gave me a price cut on my current plan. They earned my loyalty with lax DMCA enforcement and a planned fiber rollout next summer.

Your download and ping are very good!
The upload speed might struggle to upload your weekly game purchases .txt file, but otherwise you should be sorted!

A lot of providers try to force their hardware onto you here too, but usually you can opt out in some way. Not all will let you, but most will I believe. Back when I sold Internet I heard one of the routers we sold for $120 cost us about $20-$30. You could tell it was a $20 router thoughmelancholy wrote: Tue Dec 03, 2024 10:07 pmSince people are talking about their provided equipment, I should note that this is the price if you buy your own router and modem. I have my own mesh network so try to avoid provided hardware wherever possible.
One good thing about Australian Internet is the fact that it's a national network, any provider can get access to it so there's so much choice

Damn Roofus! What are you gonna do with all that speed? You'll have the ISO for every version of every distro of Linux in like a day or less!

How much does it cost you for a gigabit if you don't mind me asking. Here it's $64.95 for 100mbps, $79.95 for 500mbps, and $109.95 for 1 gigabit.
I'd say for the average user even with 3-4 people in the house that 100mbps is plenty. I'm still on the 100mbps plan and it is more than enough. I've said this before but it they offered 50mbps for around $29.95 a month I'd probably go down to that.melancholy wrote: Mon Dec 02, 2024 12:05 pm Jesus, what a thread bump.
Anyway, I recently downgraded my internet. I was paying for 300mbps, but I really don’t need internet that fast. So I dropped to the slowest Comcast offers in our area, which is 150mbps. Despite doing this like 4 months ago, I still get 300mbps. They never actually dropped me down.

This is what I imagine Ian’s setup looks like, but due to his limited internet speed, he only can stream the 0.5 second part where all the Keanu Reeves faces say ‘bullshit’ simultaneously.pixel wrote: Thu Dec 19, 2024 3:01 amLVr9w.jpgRoofus wrote: Fri Dec 13, 2024 5:14 amIt's $109.95, same as I was paying for 500 so I didn't see any reason not to.Calavera wrote: Thu Dec 12, 2024 7:00 pmDamn Roofus!
