Watched the BTTT with Corny & Greg Gagne about the AWA. How much of what Greg was saying was true as the comments are saying Jim took it easy on him when some are the stories are incorrect.

I'd have to rewatch it, but he's a Hogan type of bullshitter. He says his dad made more than any other athletes in the 50s. I don't even think he was the highest paid wrestler because Gorgeous George, Lou Thesz and Buddy Rogers were drawing big money nationally and Verne was mainly in just the Midwest. Like he didn't go to California until the 70s.

Greg's an old school bitter-ass carny who is upsetti spaghetti that he never had the body, charisma, or anything to be a top guy, and was a piece of shit dick to everyone backstage over the years as a result. Fuck him.

Thanks, a few things

- planned Hulk /Andre on CBS
- CBS deal for AWA (I think like SNME)
- Alexander Karelin to WCW to face Hulk ? & Bischoff fired him over it
-something about Turner lost TV in Russia & Karelin was going to be the next big thing to get it back
- offered Hogan $6m in 1991 to go back to AWA, had big deal in works with WGN?
- lost ESPN deal, had one lined up with WGN
- got Bischoff his job with WCW, gave him a chance as an announcer in AWA
- Herd wanted to buy AWA's timeslot in Minneapolis, wasn't WCW on syndicated TV in the US around that time?
- Says Bischoff took his idea of bringing in Hogan to WCW
- He had a NWA /AWA storyline (in WCW) with Hogan on AWA side and to do SuperBowl type events and said Eric Bischoff stole that idea for the nWo/WCW !
- could've made nWo/WCW better & last longer or something like that
- Hogan quit AWA via telegram from Tampa, said Verne thought it was Eddie Graham pranking him
- no bonuses when he helped Bischoff up TV ratings & PPV buys said Eric put them in his contract instead
- worked for Vince ? & Shawn apologised to him for his antics in the past
- has a great idea for UFC/WWE hybrid wrestling style
- something about Bischoff getting falsified letters of recommendation
- Vince picked apart the AWA to take most of their top talent whom Hogan wanted in the WWF with him

His story about Mad Dog was funny, interesting about his Dad, but now I guess everything he said was told with a grain of salt.

What year? Because by 1982 Vince Jr. was in charge and he wouldn't give Andre over for national TV unless it was New Japan.
- Alexander Karelin to WCW to face Hulk ? & Bischoff fired him over it
I doubt that because neither guy would agree to lose.
-something about Turner lost TV in Russia & Karelin was going to be the next big thing to get it back
I don't know. I just remember Bischoff was going to get them on in China but on a network Rupert Murdoch owned and Turner said no because those two hate each other.
- offered Hogan $6m in 1991 to go back to AWA, had big deal in works with WGN?
WGN is mainly just a Chicago station, although you can get it on satellite. I don't know if they'd pay that. They weren't a fraction as big as TBS or USA Network.
- got Bischoff his job with WCW, gave him a chance as an announcer in AWA
Maybe.

-

Yeah, WCW Worldwide had been syndicated since the 80s and on national cable with TBS.
- Says Bischoff took his idea of bringing in Hogan to WCW
There's no idea to "What if we got the most famous wrestler in WCW." And Hogan talked to Ric Flair about WCW.
- He had a NWA /AWA storyline (in WCW) with Hogan on AWA side and to do SuperBowl type events and said Eric Bischoff stole that idea for the nWo/WCW !
Nobody cared about AWA after 1988. The nWo idea was from Takada wrestling Muta in Japan.
- could've made nWo/WCW better & last longer or something like that
The problem was it went on too long. They should have broken up after Starrcade 97.
- Hogan quit AWA via telegram from Tampa, said Verne thought it was Eddie Graham pranking him
Could be true.
no bonuses when he helped Bischoff up TV ratings & PPV buys said Eric put them in his contract instead
Probably not true.
- worked for Vince ? & Shawn apologised to him for his antics in the past
I don't remember him in WWF. Maybe he was. Could be true.
- has a great idea for UFC/WWE hybrid wrestling style
They did that already in the 80s in Japan with UWF.
- Vince picked apart the AWA to take most of their top talent whom Hogan wanted in the WWF with him
That's true. He took Hogan, Heenan, Dr. D, Mean Gene, Ventura, Adonis, and others.

Thanks Bandit, Sean should add context to say whether these stories are true or not. I forget the year, I believe it was after Rocky III, I think Greg mentioned about Hogan being in Japan & telling him after his tour there. They had it planned Hulk v Andre on CBS.

I'm sure there was truth in some of what Greg's saying, he got mixed up a bit in some stories. The Turner one was they had Karelin as the next big thing with 3 ppvs one in US, Russia & in Japan against Hogan. Not sure if Jim played along but said Vince was interested in Karelin too but he didn't want to do pro wrestling.

Yea I thought it sounded like the worked shoot style in UWF & UWFi, I vaguely remember watching Bam Bam, Vader & Bad News I think on there.

With Vince taking the best talent from Verne, I thought that was true. Whether he singled out AWA especially he went after every top talent I believe. Most of Crockett's seemed loyal, otherwise he'd have got Dusty, Flair & the other Horsemen etc at that time too.

I definitely don't believe Karelin vs Hogan was ever going to happen. Karelin was not Kurt Angle who came in to do business. He wasn't going to take Hulk Hogan seriously and Hogan wasn't going to job. If anything Karelin would have told him it would be a shoot and Hogan couldn't.do anything to him because he was one of the most phony wrestlers ever. Hogan said on Joe Rogan's show when he did a house show loop with Kurt Angle in 2002 Angle would mess with him by doing legit mat wrestling and admits he couldn't do anything to Kurt because he was tied up in seconds.

Yea Karelin was a 3 time Olympic gold medallist & he could've been built up as a very credible opponent for Hulk, but with his credentials and background it would be silly to have Hogan beat him or even put them both in the ring together. If anything I'd have had him beat Hogan as down the line Karelin Vs Goldberg would've been something as a spectacle.

Corny said Vince was interested in him too, unless he was just playing along with what Greg was saying. His idea sounded very Rocky IV when you think about it.
