Fan-made Fallout 2 first-person remake now has over 100 developers working on it, and is targeting a Steam release while making 'fast progress'

The project lead suggests Steam may be the best home for Project Arroyo.

The upcoming fan-made Fallout 2 remake (known as Project Arroyo) is apparently making "fast progress," thanks to the 100-plus developers working on it, according to the project lead, Damion Daponte. If that isn't good enough news for you, there's also new concept art and trailers to look at.

Recently, Daponte discussed Project Arroyo's progress in an interview with The Gamer and how the team will look to release it once it's ready. "I'm leaning towards doing what Enderal: Forgotten Stories (a Skyrim mod with a similar aim) did and putting it on Steam," Daponte says, "It's just a platform that everyone has. It's easier to access, easier to update, easier to install. It's just more efficient."

However, it's not just as easy as putting it on Steam. The team working on Project Arroyo needs to ensure that everything's in order so there are no legal issues. This is because Project Arroyo uses Fallout 4's creation engine to reimagine Fallout 2 in Bethesda's first-person style.

"We would have to figure out all the specificity with [Steam], making it so you require Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 and all of its DLC to get it and make sure there are no legal issues. But we'll see—we're still looking into it. I'm personally leaning towards Steam."

Daponte also discussed whether this could mean we see Project Arroyo on Steam Deck: "Maybe, we'll see. I don't even know if mods work well on Steam Deck, to be honest. I'd have to ask my friends."

If you look at Project Arroyo's Twitter account, there's also tons of new concept art to browse, including one landscape of a new custom location, the Oakland Crater. Full of some nefarious-looking green liquid, this crater houses what looks like a bustle little town despite the waterfalls of radioactive goo raining down on it. There are also some cool mockups of a weapon called the Power Fist, which looks like it would definitely leave a mark if you were hit by it. The team is vocal on Twitter about any updates and news concerning the remake, so it's always the best place to check if you're curious about how things are going.

But if concept art isn't enough right now, then you can also take a look at a side-by-side comparison of the original Fallout 2 and the upcoming mod. This short YouTube video shows off tons of locations, like the Temple of Trials, the hunting grounds and village, and the fluorescent green Toxic Caves. It's impressive to see just how well the team has recreated the original gritty atmosphere into a 3D first-person experience. Project Arroyo doesn't yet have a release date, though you can keep up with progress on the official Reddit.

Massive Fallout 4 Mod Fallout London Finally Has a Release Date — and It's Today

Form an orderly queue.

The hotly anticipated Fallout 4 mod, Fallout London, finally launches today, July 25, after a series of delays.

Team FOLON lead project manager Dean Carter told Inverse that, "unless nuclear war happens, yes," July 25 is the release date.

Fallout London is perhaps the most high-profile mod ever created, and lets players engage with everything from "stuffy parliamentary aristocrats to a resurrection of the Knights of the Round Table to an uncompromising cult of revolutionaries" in what amounts to an expansion-sized add-on.

It has even secured the likes of Baldur's Gate 3's Neil Newbon for its voice cast, with former UK Speaker of the House John Bercow in the game, too.

The mod was previously due to arrive on April 23, 2024 but actual Fallout developer Bethesda announced a surprise update for Fallout 4, which the mod developer feared would impact its release.

Carter later lamented how Bethesda, which has made clear it's aware of Fallout: London, failed to inform Team FOLON of its plans. "That has, for lack of a better term, sort of screwed us over, somewhat," Carter said.

As a result of Bethesda's Fallout 4 updates, the release of Fallout London is slightly fiddly. If you get the mod on GOG, it's compatible with Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition from both GOG and Steam. But the Steam version of the game is after the next-gen update, making it non-compatible, which means you have to downgrade your game.

Meanwhile, GOG has confirmed that Fallout London won't be playable via Epic Games Store-bought copies of Fallout 4 at launch because the storefront doesn't support update rollbacks.

Bethesda development chief Todd Howard has confirmed Fallout 5 will arrive after the Elder Scrolls 6, which is still years away itself, though massively multiplayer online game Fallout 76 continues to be updated.

Bethesda is allegedly working on 'multiple Fallout games', including Fallout 3 Remastered, teases report

Alongside the development of The Elder Scrolls 6 for PC, Xbox and potentially PlayStation 5, Bethesda is reportedly working on a number of Fallout games. Following the studio's wrap on Starfield and the start of true development of the next Elder Scrolls, "multiple" games in the series are said to be in the works.

Bethesda is working on multiple Fallout projects

While Fallout 3 Remastered is reportedly a joint venture between the studio and Oblivion Remastered studio Virtuous, more projects are reportedly in the works.

This is according to VGC journalist Jordan Middler speaking on an episode of the Friends Per Second podcast. In the series' latest episode, Middler claimed that numerous projects in the Fallout series are in multiple stages of development.

While discussing the recent Microsofy lay-offs, which saw the cancellation of Everwild, Perfect Dark, and the next MMO from the studio behind Elder Scrolls Online, the journalist explained that Xbox is going hard on Fallout for the future.

"Fallout is the big one," Middler claimed. "There are multiple Fallout projects in development, including, as far as I'm aware, that one that I'm sure you're all wanting. It's not far enough in along to say anything like 'you're going to be playing this game anytime soon'."

Middler then joked, "Anyway, New Vegas 2, coming soon". Is this the one we're "all wanting"? Yes, but then also so is Fallout 3 Remastered, Fallout 5 and even a remake of Fallout 2. The fanbase is rabid, and hungry, and it's been a long time since they've been fulfilled outside of Fallout 76 updates.

Of course, the one project every fan has asked for over the past decade is, indeed, Fallout New Vegas 2, or even just a remaster of the original. With Microsoft now owning both Bethesda and Obsidian—and both studio's are thankfully still around after last week's lay-offs—there's potential for collaboration once again. However, that would depend on both studios actually wanting that.

Fallout: Bakersfield, the new fan creation from Alexander and Denis Berezin using Doom Total Conversion.

A retro-inspired FPS using Doom Total Conversion, Fallout Bakersfield pulls from the classic Fallout aesthetic of Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 and carries with it the gunplay of Fallout 3 and Fallout 4, with a splash of original Doom.

This ambitious fan mod doesn't have a release date yet.
