I watched most of the game on the Nick stream. Disorienting but fun, and it would've been maddening had I cared which team won. Imagine if you're a 49ers fan hearing SpongeBob laughing when the Chiefs drove down the field in overtime.

I heard when there was a scuffle they'd cut to Squidward waiting in a really long line to use the restroom. I'm assuming they cut out Kelce's elder abuse of Andy?

Oh that's why they showed the Squidward clips. It makes sense now, I wondered how they were hiding the less wholesome moments. There weren't any yelling or angry moments on the Nickelodeon broadcast.

Between the distracting presentation, our dishwasher breaking, and folding laundry, the whole game is a blur.

I get the feeling that the importance of it to your average person is: Taylor Swift > Taylor Swifts boyfriend > half time > the coaches > the tweets > the players who aren't dating Taylor Swift > the actual game itself > the sport.

I can't fathom that happening in any other sport. Ever.
I can't ever recall anything being more important than the sport itself, the closest thing I can think of the spectacle outshining the sports is when the Olympic games have a particularly good or shit opening of closing ceremony and not a lot of records are broken in the actual games.

My interest in American football is usually just a highlight reel now and then. It's probably the sport I've watched the least (although golf would be close)

But it's quite weird that the usual biggest part of the day to be celebrated is when they stop playing for a break has been displaced this year.

I simply can't imagine watching even a baseball game and having other irrelevant bullshit being more important.

The original "bowl game" was invented in college football so teams would go play for fun weeks after the season is over. The games were always in fun places like California, Louisiana and Florida so it would draw crowds from all these different schools. And the bowl games were scheduled around New Years so northern schools had an incentive to take a weekend off and go play in Miami or Los Angeles.

Professional football always had the NFL, but then its biggest rival (AFL) got popular in the sixties. They were completely separate leagues with their own rules and playoffs. But like college football, NFL and AFL management thought it would be fun to have an exhibition game between the two top teams. That's how the Super Bowl came to be, and why it's normally in some nice tropical tourism town. It was supposed to be a fun spectacle created for tourism dollars.

Then the AFL and NFL merged into one league with two conferences and the Super Bowl was elevated to the league championship game. Now it had more than just prestige on the line; it meant a lot more to win a Super Bowl than it did in those first four years. Those AFL and NFL league championships got demoted to conference championships. Take it from someone who follows a team who only loses Super Bowls, no one really gives a shit about conference championships.

I'd say ticket prices are a good measurement to figure out when the Super Bowl mutated into the consumerism spectacle it is today. Shit got expensive in the nineties and early 2000s. That's when the commercials became a huge thing, and everyone felt obligated to have a Super Bowl party.
