Today is the 60th anniversary of the Beatles on Ed Sullivan

I'm always obsessed with [event] happened [years] after [other event]. My sister loved the Beatles right around when the Anthology series came out. As a 7 year old, 1964 was an eternity back in 1994. Now it's been 30 years since then.

The Beatles Marketing Machine worked; I was brainwashed back then as a small child. As a kid in the nineties, Beatlemania felt like the beginning of the universe. Every artist I grew up with said that was it, that this one TV appearance sparked everything.

I'm more jaded now, and I've been chafed by the Beatles Marketing Machine many times. I got cynical about the Beatles back when Across the Universe came out and every Coldplay fan at college were Beatle devotees. The Beatles felt more like Baby's First Rock Band than the ethereal gods I thought they were.

Now I'm obsessed with Paul's solo stuff and his songwriting. I was like every other "true fan" when I thought John or George were the one true musician in the group. But I've come to terms that I love Paul's pop music much more than the other solo stuff.

I never hated Paul for it because he was schmaltzy even in the Beatles. Like you know Lennon thought When I'm 64 and Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da sucked. So of course going solo he was going to lean into being the lighthearted pop guy just like John leaned into being the philosophical guy and George leaned into being the spiritual guy.

With John & Paul they were very influenced by the music of the time & if you look at the charts back then there's quite a lot of what you could call "schmaltzy" stuff. They covered "Till There Was You" for example.

Both were influenced by Buddy Holly & I think Buddy's underrated as a songwriter & really deserves more props. They also were listening to early Motown, so that's why there's covers of Money etc. I think Elvis was popular with them too, especially with John. As was Lonnie Donegan & the whole Skiffle thing as The Beatles evolved from the skiffle group The Quarrymen.

With George even he interpolated "He's So Fine" by The Chiffons for "My Sweet Lord". So as songwriters they all had a certain element of schmaltz, as that was the "in thing" at the time. John's "Rock & Roll" album shows the type of music they listened to which you could say are their musical influences.

Yeah, Paul always praises Buddy Holly as his idol and how The Crickets inspired their name. I think Buddy would have survived the British Invasion better than Elvis did if he lived because Elvis was being pulled in too many directions and his music suffered for a while, whereas Buddy only cared about the music. And The Crickets were arguably better musicians with Tommy Allsup, Carl Bunch and a young pre-country Waylon Jennings.

Definitely they most likely had toured with Buddy & The Crickets too, like they did Roy Orbison. Elvis I believe was making 4 movies in 1964, plus he wasn't a fan of majority of the songs he had to record for the soundtrack. The Beatles did think a lot of Elvis too, especially John, although I've read & heard mixed things about their friendship, they also all met up with Elvis at Graceland. I don't believe anything was recorded though, he did cover "Hey Jude" & sang "Something" & "Yesterday" in concert. I think Elvis could have recorded studio versions of the latter too as they would have kinda fit his style at the time.

When they met Elvis they were admittedly too star struck by him to talk so Elvis did most of the talking. Tom Parker and Brian Epstein ended up really liking each other from the meeting, though.

I think Elvis would have done a great job singing Let It Be. That song works better with a singer that has a more powerful voice than Paul.

Definitely, Elvis was a great singer, I think had it been his choice (most I believe were chosen by Parker) he'd have recorded some better songs. Colonel Parker wanted the 68 comeback to be just Christmas songs & if it were I don't think it'd be as impactful without "If I Can Dream" which along with "American Trilogy" showcase Elvis vocals best I think.

Elvis he felt loyal to Parker so that's why he never fired him as manager, had he did then I think he'd have stopped making the movies, all the concerts he was doing & recorded much better music. He did record some good stuff at the Stax studios. When Elvis was the trendsetter he then had to follow the trends. Whereas he could have started writing songs and evolved more as an artist instead of singing songs he had little or no interest in for movies he didn't even want to make.

There were a lot of butthurt football fans when the Eras tour started earning "Biggest event at [VENUE] ever" awards at different stadiums.

The place will be cleansed after a few good hard whacks of the wicket or whatever happens in Cricket.
