That Golden Axe 32X version is pretty neat. I'm not really fan of Golden Axe, I haven't really played it but I just find the 32X to be an interesting system. I've always wondered what a CD32X game could look like it someone took full advantage of all the hardware. We probably won't ever see anything like that though unfortunately. A port of Sonic Mania to the Saturn and CD32X would be pretty awesome though. Kind of pointless but cool none the less.

If that is really running on a 32X that is pretty damn impressive! At 1:57 he mentions that it isn't even using both SH-2 processors! It is too bad the 32X was such a flop and never was able to reach anywhere close to it's full potential back in the day. I wonder if there is anyway it could have been somewhat successful back when it was first released.

I think if it had been released as a stand-alone system for $99 and new games were $20-$30 max then maybe it could have worked as a budget system for people who didn't want to drop $300-$400 on a PS1 or Saturn. But with it being a $160 add-on that required you already had a Genesis it had no chance. Even if it had been a cheap stand-alone I don't really know if it would have helped much. I think it just came out too late in the game. If it had been able to come out in 1992 instead of 1994 that might have helped it. Or maybe if they had marketed it as "The Ultimate 2D system" but I know what wouldn't have worked either. Around that time if it wasn't 3D nobody cared. Even if the 32X was a 2D powerhouse and could have done stuff like Sonic Mania most people wouldn't have cared. The Saturn had several really good looking 2D games and they wouldn't even release them outside of Japan because people more or less looked down on 2D games at that time.

I'm trying to think up all these ways it could have been successful but really they should have never made it and put more time and money into improving the Saturn. Sega used to seem like such a huge successful compsn

The 32X is always an interesting conundrum: It existed because of Sega's insanely weird business practices, which are the same circumstances that doomed it. It had no chance of survival with Sega's strategy that pitted its Japanese and American offices against each other. I think the 32X could've work if:

• Sega doesn't release the Saturn.
• Sony wasn't competitive with the Playstation (higher price, bad hardware decisions, etc.)
• Sega priced the 32X much lower as a budget upgrade/loss leader.
• Sega discontinues Genesis and instead sells the proposed Mars console instead.
• Sega used the Genesis-32X-Sega CD hybrid as the basis of a new standalone console to rival the N64 and PS1 (that was backwards compatible with the 32X).

So in this sick, twisted future, Sega releases this new console somewhere around 1997 with the 32X/Mars holding everyone over. All of the messy hardware from the CD-32X is amalgamated into a new unified hardware specification. Maybe they could've used new beefed up components that were also backwards compatible with 32X/Genesis/Sega CD games.

I don't know, I remember seeing 32X games at the time and them not being impressive. I think they would have been better just not messing up the Saturn release in the states. A lot of retailers decided not to carry the console because of it.

Also I just found out, the 32X had more than 32 games released for it! I always thought it had less.

Sega were as dumb as hell. Just like Atari and Commodore.

All Sega had to do was not release the 32X and wait an extra year to release the Saturn (from the Japan release date) so they had everything ready. Instead of adding a second CPU, add a 3D chip that was similar to the PSX one, add extra RAM, have backwards compatibility with the MD/GEN/SCD and make sure you have all the arcade ports, a Sonic 2D game and Panzer Dragoon at launch.

The system still wouldn't have beaten the Playstation but it would have done better than it did.

Then release the Dreamcast with a DVD drive.

Agreed, 32X should've never existed. Any fond thoughts on the thing are pure rose-tinted nostalgia. The arcade ports were nice, but there was no After Burner market in 1995. Model 1 games could be eeked out as Virtua Fighter ran okay with some sacrifices.

The Saturn was perfectly designed to fail in any North American market.

damn, thought from the still it'd be more comparing things like Terminator that had real diffences, most of those are the same with not even changes to take advanage of better sound chicps or anything
