I had never heard anyone call it that until a few months ago. The DMG is for Dot Matrix Game but why do they call it that and no just the original Gameboy? Is this something that has always been said and I just didn't know?

A fair while. It become common in the 2000s to call it that to differentiate it from the Color.

Really? I thought it was something fairly recent. I've never really been much into the Game Boy scene but still you'd think I'd have seen it somewhere before 2023. I still say they should just called it the Original Game Boy to differentiate from the Color. I guess it still makes more sense then why they always called the Gamecube the GCN instead of the NGC.Dr. Zoidberg wrote: Fri Jan 05, 2024 5:16 pm A fair while. They call it that because that’s its model number (DMG-01), and it makes it easier to differentiate it from the other versions. If you just say Gameboy, there’s 4 versions you could be talking about. But the Gameboy DMG can only be the original because that’s what the model number is.
As for GameCube, GCN is the official abbreviation by Nintendo themselves. In official documents when referring to the GameCube, they would use GCN. It’s believed they did that because A. NGC was already officially trademarked by National Geographic Channel and B. NGC could be confused with another video game company Neo Geo.
