I think I've asked this before but can you reccomend me some good RPGs?

Post by Calavera »

I just finished Mario RPG and I want more RPG! My favorites are Skies of Arcadia and Grandia II. Last time I asked Dragon's Quest VII was recommended and I did play it. I liked it ok, I made it to the part where you get the ship and kinda just didn't play it anymore. The only Final Fantasy I've played is VII. I thought about maybe going through it again since it has been so long since I last played it but idk. Maybe I should try Chrono Trigger or Secret of Mana?

I'm up for any suggestions. I don't mind if a game is grindy. I kind of like grinding in RPGs. One thing I require are turn based battles. I've tried RPGs that have different battles systems and just didn't care for it. Good ole turn based is good with me.

Dragon's Quest VIII is better than VII, IMO. Check that one out.

Suikoden 1 & 2 are great. 3 is good, but a bit slow paced.

Chrono Trigger is great.

Secret Of Mana is also great, but it's an action RPG like Zelda 3.

Phantasy Star 1, 2, 3 and 4 are worth a play.

Dragon Quest VIII is way better than VII. DQVIII is about as traditional as turn-based RPG’s get, but it has a great story that moves you along. Don’t bother with XI, it was bad.

If you want to give Final Fantasy VII another shot, the modding community has created a mod called Echo-S that adds full voice acting to the entire game along with a much-improved translation and some other fixes and additions that modernizes the game. I used the whole set of Tsunamods to basically overhaul the game in a way that the new Mario RPG overhauled the original.

If you don’t want to do a bunch of modding and just want to play a solid turn-based game with a great story, Final Fantasy X is probably the best bet. The new ports come with all the International bonuses and, if you are inclined, some cheats to help the game move faster (the 4x battle speed really helps the grindy sections that are required to beat the secret super bosses). It’s also as traditional of a turn-based RPG as you can get on a modern system.

Looking for turn based with a TON of story and tons of routes and customization? Try Persona 4. Sadly the jokes about Persona games taking 10 hours to actually start are true. P4 is a slow burn. But when it hooks you, it REALLY sucks you in. My first playthrough of Persona 4, I was so sad for the game to end I postponed the final boss for 2 weeks. I just didn’t want it to end.

Another suggestion that gets joked about a lot but truely is fantastic is Mother 3. Tomato did an amazing job translating that game and it is full of weirdness, silliness, and sadness. It’s seriously a beautiful game that if you ever played Earthbound, you absolutely must play Mother 3. And if you haven’t played Earthbound, give it a shot first (thought I will admit it feels a bit dated).

I recommend Panzer Dragoon Saga for the Saturn, but the battle system is not exactly turn-based. It has turns, but also constant repositioning to get to the enemy's weak side. I love it, but it's not traditional. Do give it a try. (Emulation tip: use Yaba Sanshiro to play in high res, but to prevent random crashes, set it to also emulate the 32 Megabit RAM cartridge. SSF doesn't seem to have the crashing issue, but it can't play in high res.)

If you don't have the hintbook for PS2, be sure to get the maps, and use a ROM hack to make it easier, because HOLY SHIT that game is hard and grindy.

Whoops, that was a typo. VIII(8) is what I meant to type. I need to get back into it. I haven't played it in awhile but not so long that I don't remember what to do. I got to the part when you get the ship and can sail freely around the map. I went to a couple islands then just haven't played it since.

Really? That sounds VERY interesting. I'm definitely going to look into that. I would like to play FF7 again and it sounds like that would be the perfect way to do so.

I totally forgot about Persona. I was looking into them awhile back. I feel like Persona 5 is the one that usually got mentioned. So if I decide on Persona you would recommend I start with 4?

Of course i've played Earthbound! Many time infact! :olol: I've always hoped someone could mod Earthbound to have a more tradional turn based battle system where you can actually see your character attack rather than it being more or less text based.

I've also played Mother 3 back when the translation first came out. I blew through it pretty quickly though and honestly don't really remember anything about it at all. That might end up being my choice for the next RPG I play. Then after I finish Mother 3 I'll have to give the modded FF7 a try.

5 is the better game. It has unique dungeons that you actually interact with and a better combat system. 4 has randomized dungeons, which has you finding the stairs to the next floor until you reach the top.

But while 5 is the better game, 4 is the better story by a mile. No other game I’ve played made me feel more connected to the cast of characters as 4 did. I didn’t want to leave them, and I felt actual sadness as the end of the school year approached (these games take place across 1 school year).

The Russian made RPO - A Shmel is a good unit. While technically not an RPG, it’s a flamethrower.

The OGV-7 is a decent unit with fragmentation grenades. It’s ideal for gutting intruders quickly with minimal fuss, and leaving a big fucking mess for some other bastard to clean up.

I'm having a Mother 3 mandela moment. Apparently there is no official translation of it available. I specifically remember someone posting here about how Nintendo released Mother 3 in english and my reaction being basically "well big whoop the fan translation has been available for years" I remember Melancholy basically agreeing with me on that.

I remember the topic, but it was me saying that if they did release an official translation it wouldn’t be as good as Tomato’s fan translation. There is no official translation.

Could you make your own translation?

I think Mother 3 will be my next RPG. It is so weird how I have played through it before yet I don't remember anything at all about it. I have no clue what the story is or even who the characters are. About the only thing I remember is that Pokey shows up at some point. It just seems really weird how I remember nothing at all about a game that I completed. A made a thread about it on here back when I beat it but it was before something happened to the forum and we lost all our usernames and posts.
