He really paid attention to UK music and got the American rights to The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure, The Cult, Echo & The Bunnymen, Modern English, My Bloody Valentine, Pet Shop Boys, Primal Scream, Ride, Soft Cell, and others. So even though they were primarily on their British labels and he didn't discover them until they were already successful in Europe before he signed them, that was a great roster. Plus Madonna on top having huge hits.

Seems like we were lucky to have him promote these bands in the U.S.

He was of the era where record execs actually knew what good music was and weren't just looking at money. He would take risks if he liked something. Nobody does that anymore and that's why so much of the pop charts sound the same. Like even Rick Rubin was hamstrung by corporate when he was in charge of Columbia for a few years and couldn't do what he wanted to (although he was involved with Adele becoming a giant superstar.) So he quit to go back to production, meditation and hanging out at wrestling shows. So if the industry would let Rubin go it's telling.
