Trolls Win: Ghostbusters To Debut Behind Secret Life of Pets
It's okay. They can get morons who like bad movies with identity politics as the selling point to see the sequel if it's about transgender Ghostbusters. And Leslie Jones can co-star in that one too.The rebooted “Ghostbusters” is launching with a respectable $46.5 million opening weekend at 3,963 locations, trailing “The Secret Life of Pets” for the top spot at the U.S. box office, Saturday estimates showed.
Illumination-Universal’s hit “The Secret Life of Pets” should win the weekend with $50 million at 4,381 sites, declining only 52% from its opening. The animated comedy’s 10-day total will hit $202 million by the end of Sunday.
Sony-Village Roadshow’s “Ghostbusters,” starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, is on its way to posting the best debut weekend for a live-a((ction comedy since “Pitch Perfect 2” opened with $69 million last year. Sony’s recent estimates had been in the $38 million to $40 million range while rivals had forecasted correctly that it would take in between $45 million and $50 million.
“Ghostbusters” topped “Pets” on its opening day on Friday with $17.2 million, while “Pets” took in $15 million on its eighth day. “Pets” should more than make up the difference on Saturday and Sunday.
“Ghostbusters,” directed by Paul Feig, received a decent B+ Cinemascore from its audience with under 25 moviegoers giving the film an A-. Sony noted that it represented the biggest live-action opening since Fox’s “X-Men: Apocalypse” two months ago and the second-highest live-action non-superhero film of the year behind Disney’s “The Jungle Book.”
“Ghostbusters” also has had to overcome the perception — particularly among male fans — that it would not be as humorous as the 1984 original. That film, starring Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson, was a smash hit with a massive $229 million domestic total.
First tracking last month had shown that the opening weekend for the new “Ghostbusters” could be well under $40 million but a massive marketing campaign and solid reviews gave it some needed momentum. The film has a current 73% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It’s also facing a tricky road to being profitable, given its hefty $144 million price tag. “Ghostbusters” will need to maintain solid performance in the coming weeks to wind up in the black — and generate significant grosses overseas. “Ghostbusters” opens internationally in the English language territories of the U.K. and Australia as well as Brazil and a handful of other smaller markets.
The three previous teamings of McCarthy and Feig — “Bridesmaids,” “The Heat” and “Spy” — all generated strong performances following their opening weekends. Three new titles open next weekend: Paramount’s “Star Trek Beyond,” Fox’s “Ice Age: Collision Course” and New Line’s horror-thriller “Lights Out.”
As with the original, “Ghostbusters” is set in Manhattan being beset by an invasion of ghosts. Ivan Reitman, who directed the original film, produced with Amy Pascal.
“The Secret Life of Pets” blew away forecasts last weekend with a $104.4 million U.S. opening, breaking the record by “Inside Out” for best launch of an original animated title. “Pets” is already the seventh-highest domestic grosser of the year and will likely wind up at over $300 million by the end of its run.
Broad Green’s “The Infiltrator” starring Bryan Cranston as a federal agent battling Pablo Escobar’s drug cartel, opened on Wednesday at 1,600 locations and will wind up the weekend with about $6 million.
Disney-Pixar’s fifth weekend of “Finding Dory” and Warner’s third weekend of “The Legend of Tarzan” are battling for third with about $11 million each, followed by Fox’s second weekend of “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” with $7.3 million. “Dory” will have grossed over $445 million domestically by the end of the weekend.
Lionsgate’s platform launch of Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” generated $114,500 at five sites on Friday, projecting to a a strong weekend of around $325,000. The period comedy, which opened the Cannes Film Festival, has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 78%.

It just doesn't look like a movie I want to want to watch, so I will not pay to see it.

I just looked up Secret Life of Pets, and I now kinda want to see it. Jenny Slate, Lois CK, and Kevin Hart are in it. Only thing stopping me is it HAS to be tame because it is a kids movie.

Trailers for Feig movies are almost always terribly cut. I saw the movie on Friday night and honestly liked it. Hemsworth and McKinnon were the two best parts.OrangeRibbon wrote:I have heard that is was a mixed bag and the trailer was the worse scenes in the movie.

Yeah, of course it'd lose out to "Pets." That movie will fucking dominate the theaters for a month. It's made by the same assholes who created minions, it'll make hundreds of millions of dollars.
You know what would have been #2 in the theaters this week? Ghostbusters 3 with Bill Murray and Dan Akyroyd. You know why? That movie would have sucked even more than this one.
What the Internet is concerned about is how Leslie Jones supposedly took a shit on their precious childhood. But I think Akyroyd is overrated and Murray is too good to do another Ghostbusters movie.
Let alone the fact that Ghostbusters 2016 isn't even responsible for the past. The only thing it stopped was a script penned by Landis' son, and his only major writing credit is Chronicle.
I'm going to see Ghostbusters just as a little fuck you to the crybabies out there. I'm tired of the whining, especially from the 4channers that always seem to be so self-righteous and above this kind of idiotic BS.
If it's terrible, at least I saw it with my own eyes and not spent a year of my life crying about it.

I stopped giving a shit about Ghostbusters in 1989, so I'm not thinking the YOU RUINED MY CHILDHOOD brigade are at all respectable. But the LOVE THE MOVIE OR YOU'RE A MISOGYNIST brigade is just as bad. It's a shitty corporate Hollywood movie. Getting in an internets war either way is retarded.
The only amusing thing to come out of this was a troll asking Leslie Jones if it was true She will play Clubber Lang in a Rocky III remake.

I totally agree. Luckily, I don't see as much as that side's opinion. But as an Internet-dwelling white male in his 30s, I'm told to think that the reboot is the shittiest movie ever. I'm still more upset about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but money is money.Bandit wrote:I stopped giving a shit about Ghostbusters in 1989, so I'm not thinking the YOU RUINED MY CHILDHOOD brigade are at all respectable. It was ridiculous on Reddit after the trailer came out. I tried to discuss the trailer and people's thoughts about the characters, but would get shot down and branded a gender rights brigadier. The biggest argument in the past year is how stereotypical the characters are, based off of the trailer
Well no shit, it's a stupid trailer.
But whatever, I'm hearing the movie isn't that good. The biggest champion for the LGBT community at work said Ghostbusters sucked. That's a critical review of the film, not some dumb knee-jerk, hive-mind Internet flame.

Re: Ghostbusters 2016 thread
like the one link 'Why It's Important For Boys To See 'Ghostbusters' Too' I didn't try to read much but I'm guessing it should read something like "to show what a mess remakes can be to be very careful about what you watch" now follows my thoughts on the film:
watched the new Ghostbusters last night, like the Robocop remake it might not have seemed as bad if it had a different name but then again they put in appearences from all 3 surviving Ghostbusters & Sigourney Weaver as well as Janine, best reapearence from the ghost front was Slimer worst was making Stay Puft a damn parade balloon. In fact in the entire run of the film only 1 ghost got busted & they let that one go, for the rest of it in the big fight at the end they shot many ghosts sure but for some reason the ghosts then vanish, presumably to pop up far away or something, so untl the evil portal is shut the success rate is zero ghosts busted (due to the they let go).
I think like the Robocop remake I may get it on Blu-Ray eventually, when I see it at about £3

Re: Ghostbusters 2016 thread
I watched the movie. Here a few points from my own personal opinion:
- Twice in the movie they make reference to Youtube comments saying how shit they are. One even has a scene where a YT comment literally says something along the line of "bitches aint catching ghosts" Really Feig? Are you really that petty and angry towards men?
- It definitely doesn't have a Ghostbusters vibe. Definitely feels like a flat out comedy more than the original did.
- The "comedy" just wasn't overly funny. I can count the things I laughed at and they all involved Chris Hemsworth's dimwitted character or Kate McKinnon. Even that wasn't anything to brag about, it was just how dumb he was and some amusing reactions/lines from her.
- They REALLY ram the girl power aspect of it down your throat. The original movies didn't make that many references to the fact they were men, if any at all! If they're not being called Ghostbuster, they definitely make sure you know they're women/girls.
- If Kristen Wiig's character were played by a man and Chris Hemsworth character were a woman, people would fucking lose it and say that the character was practically trying to rape the receptionist.
- All men are made to appear as either assholes or incompetent.
- People mentioned this a lot prior to the release but the ghosts just aren't really scary at all and feel like they'd be better suited to a Scooby Doo movie.
- The highlights of the movie for me were Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth. Even McKinnon sometimes felt a little over the top, as did the stupidity of Chris Hemsworth but at the end of the day they were the only things in the movie that I didn't really hate.
- The final point that I can't stress enough, this movie did not need to be made. It's a remake of the first movie with elements of the 2nd and The Real Ghostbusters. It doesn't do anything really new make this a movie worth seeing.
If I had to put a number on it, I'd say maybe 4 or 5 out of 10. Not extremely horrible, just not worth seeing again and I could have done without seeing it in the first place. I didn't rate it lower for the points above about Hemsworth and McKinnon.

Re: Ghostbusters 2016 thread
Leslie Jones is the victim of a horrifying hacking incident in which someone cracked into her website and exposed a series of nude photos of the comedienne.
The heartless hacker also filled the page with images of the “Saturday Night Live” star’s driver’s license and passport, revealing her personal information.
A video of Harambe, the gorilla who was shot and killed at a Cincinnati Zoo this summer, was also posted to the top of her website.
The explicit and horribly racist content is the latest hate-filled attack on the 48-year-old entertainer, who was ambushed with malicious diatribe from internet trolls last month. Among the cruelest comments she received were posts comparing her to a gorilla.
The vile online bullying prompted Jones to repost a slew of the vulgar comments she received, before briefly quitting the website in response.
The sexist slurs and racist remarks were allegedly sparked by users who were knocking the African-American actress’ lead role as Patty Tolan in “Ghostbusters.”
“I leave Twitter tonight with tears and a very sad heart,” she wrote. “All this cause I did a movie. You can hate the movie but the s--t I got today ... wrong.”
Following the horrific incident, she met with the CEO of the social media site to talk about ways to prevent abusive users from spewing hate on the service.
“They helped me out. We got a whole bunch of accounts taken off on Twitter,” she said on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”
Jones refused to give in to the haters and instead used her platform to raise awareness on cyber bullying when she returned to Twitter.
“Hate speech and freedom of speech, two different things,” she told Meyers.
Jones' website has since been taken down following Wednesday's hacking scandal.
A rep for the actress did not immediately respond to the Daily News' request for comment.
I laughed at the writer calling them horrifying several times in the article. He must have seen the photos before writing the article.

That pic wasn't that bad. An unattractive woman with her boobs out. It could have been a lot worse. Just imagine how worse it could be. Go on, picture it now!
People are being total cunts with all the racist shit they are throwing at her.

They're doing it because she claimed one of the Gamergate guys used a racial slur to her when he didn't but Twitter banned his account anyway when they lumped him in with everybody who tweeted her. So since then they've been taunting her with the Harambe stuff there and on Reddit because they're pissed about that.

From what I've seen she's not exactly innocent when it comes to the racism. Oh but wait, I forgot, she's black so she can't be racist.
