This seems like the worst idea ever if you want to stay in business.

Maybe the point is to not stay in business. I can’t imagine hotel attendance has been all that great after being associated with the worst mass shooting in history. Maybe the strategy is to sink it quickly so they can file bankruptcy on the place and move on. And if a lawsuit nets them some extra money in the meantime, then all the better.

I personally wouldn't have a problem staying there (unless it was in the room of the shooting) because I really don't blame the hotel for the shooting. They can't check through bags to have seen him bringing in guns. So I don't think they're any more liable than the book depository Lee Harvey Oswald shot JFK from.
