Youtube is demonetizing videos that aren't advertiser friendly
And people aren't happy about it. Basically anything sweary or controversial is getting demonetized.

I always said you shouldn't depend on youtube as your main income. The demonetization rules could change at any time.

Why can't they just ask advertisers their comfort level with things. Geico might not want to advertise on something, but a movie studio would. Then automate ads on different levels.

If they demonetize sweary and controversial stuff that is about 90 percent of the ad revenue. Then the other 10 percent goes to those awful "toy channels"

Don't like the terms of service, then use a different platform or create your own platform.
I can make a rough twitter clone by tomorrow, it isn't that hard. It won't be nearly as popular and the SEO will be crap but it isn't hard.

My issue is more how vague they are with what is acceptable than saying they don't have a right to do it (of course they do.) And that it won't be on an even playing field to everyone.

Do you think they're going to demoneitize CNN for putting up a video with natural disaster footage or Syria war footage? Or that a rapper rapping about violence who puts his video up himself will get treated the same as a major label rapper with a VEVO account? Or would Comedy Central get their ads taken off if they put up a Tosh.0 video mocking the Hawaiian Bobble Head Freak Out video the same way they did it to this guy?
So just spell out in detail what the sponsors have a problem with and treat everyone, corporation or random nobody, the same.

Considering that is is probably an algorithm that handles it, yes.
Edit, I am guessing it is an Algorithm.

around the 1:45 mark, it looks like it is pretty much it is an automated algorithm, and there is an option to have a person verify it.

But I'm sure they can take it off of favored accounts.OrangeRibbon wrote:Considering that is is probably an algorithm that handles it, yes.

Oh no, they treat their highest earners differently, society has never prepared us for that.Bandit wrote:But I'm sure they can take it off of favored accounts.OrangeRibbon wrote:Considering that is is probably an algorithm that handles it, yes.

Re: Youtube is demonetizing videos that aren't advertiser friendly
But if the complaint is advertisers get to choose what TV shows they advertise on and ads for YT right now are random, what is the difference between some random person telling sex jokes or Kevin Hart posting a clip of his stand up where he talks about sex? More views? How do they know something won't go viral? Shouldn't that be seen as the same risk an advertiser takes running ads on a new show that could be off the air in 4 weeks or run for 6 seasons?
I also want to know how much of this was advertisers really complaining and how much was Google paranoia. If there's something really offensive like a video of a person ranting about Obama and calling him the n-word, how many people are honestly going to think TD Waterhouse saw this guy and said "We need to get this poor white supremacist money, advertise on this guy's channel!" I'd guess the vast majority of complaints are really coming from people seeing their copyrighted material getting monetized and asking YT to pull it.

My pet theory is that this is the first step in trying to move enough popular channels to Red so that people will actually pay for it. There are no commercials on YouTube Red, so no advertisers to offend.
