The Game Awards Thread

Post by Dr. Zoidberg »

A thread for The Game Awards. I suppose it can also be for other game awards, too.

So like, game awards are even more of a joke than Grammy's aren't they?

If DLC for 2 year old games and reimaginings/remakes of games from god damn 1997 can be game of the year.

I'm nominating PONG from 1972 as game of the year.

Yeah. PONG is the game of 2024.

You would need to remake it first.

And Balatro is GOTY.

Pong has been remade more times than the last of us games!
It doesn't matter that the last remake came out in 2022... Atari 50 had pong on it, and if DLC for 2 year old games is eligible for god damn game of the fucking year, then god damn it pong is!

I'm surprised to not see Palworld for anything... At all. Probably the only game from this year I've actually played for more than 5 minutes.

Furthering my belief that game awards are a joke.

'Black Myth: Wukong' Wins 2024 Game Of The Year At Golden Joysticks

The 42nd Golden Joystick Awards has crowned Black Myth: Wukong the Ultimate Game of the Year for 2024, following a supercharged public vote that drew over 12 million ballots across the event's 21 categories.

Black Myth: Wukong, which was among several 2024 GOTY nominees who could count on a strong showing from hugely loyal fanbases, stopped a dominant Final Fantasy VII Rebirth from taking the most awards of the night, while also successfully holding off Astro Bot, Silent Hill 2, and indie darlings Balatro and Animal Well for the biggest award of the night. It also, unsurprisingly, won best visual design.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Helldivers 2 led the evening with four awards each. FFVII shone in the storytelling, soundtrack, and acting categories, with Briana White (Aerith Gainsborough) and Cody Christian (Cloud Strife) securing Best Supporting and Lead Performer awards respectively. Meanwhile, Helldivers 2 claimed gold for multiplayer, console GOTY, best game trailer, and the Critics' Choice Award.

Astro Bot didn't leave empty-handed; it took best audio design, while creators Team ASOBI were named Studio of the Year. Fan-favorite Satisfactory snagged PC Game of the Year, while the excellent poker, card-building roguelike Balatro–which I still had hopes to win the biggest award of them all–claimed a brace of trophies via the Best Indie Game and Breakthrough Awards.

Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree also won Best Game Expansion, which should make it especially hilarious if it wins Game of the Year at The Game Awards on December 12–a nomination Paul Tassi rightly said it doesn't deserve on principle.

GTA 6 could win Most Anticipated for decades, I still think that as the time gets nearer they'll swerve as they cant quite count to 6 yeat & re-release something else again

The BAFTAs have done theirs now.

A well deserved bunch of wins for the phenomenal Astro Bot.. Even if the awards are bullshit for robbing Thank Goodness You're Here of debut game, and new Intellectual Property, and only awarding it best British game.
It deserved more than 1 win as the second best game of last year, but I suppose it is quite short and at least they got Astro Bot right by giving it more awards than anything else.

In the future fucking poker/solitaire shouldn't ever be nominated for anything... That shit has existed since the dawn of time.

No, today I'll play something good. :olol:

Naughts and crosses is still naughts and crosses if you call it KABLAMMO and have naughts and crosses replaced by Metroid and Castlevania skins.
go fish is still go fish if you call it BLASTULTRA! And add more dialogue than a dragon age game.

they are good games, but calling chess KINGKNIGHTO! And leveling up your pawn animations with procedurally generated dungeon levels should not see it as a nominee for anything other than an artistic award.

I don't doubt that poker X hearthstone is a good game, but it's not a game of the year. Actually Hearthstone is probably more suitable for game of the year... And it came out in what 2012?

If someone could combine the binding of Isaac with 52 card pickup... NOW THERE'S YOUR GAME OF THE YEAR.

If you like mindless crap, you can get solitaire on practically any computer made in the last 40 years... We also have a world class casino in the heart of our city that's been around for a large number of years, where there are many options for fun gambling at any time of the day if that's your thing.

Of course if you just want a simple phone game, Candy crush and FarmVille have existed for a long time as well.

Magic the gathering X Monopoly would also be more fun.

All of those games I mentioned should be nominated for game of the year. They've all existed since the stone age though, so shouldn't be eligible for a game of the year.

Balatro is based on poker, but there's a lot more to it than that.

It's like saying Astro Bot is just Jumpman.

It's actually free on PlayStation plus this month, and still not worth playing. :olol:
In fact, not only am I not going to claim it, I've punished Sony for adding it by unsubscribing for a month! I'll resub when they add better games than this shit!

I will admit I was wrong about a game genre though... but it's not god damn poker/solitaire. I've recently tried to play Cult of the Lamb again.
When it came out in 2022 I was interested, and when I played it shortly after it came out I didn't think that highly of The Binding of Isaac X Animal crossing.
But my 2022 was busy with old games. I probably played more games in 2022 alone than I had the 2 decades prior. So it was competing with a lot of fun.

But now, a few years later, I've actually enjoyed playing it for a good few hours now. It's been more fun than Elden ring and God of war Ragnarok, but I don't think I'd call it game of the year 2022.

I'll give it the rarely awarded: Game I wish I enjoyed earlier award!
Not many games I regret not enjoying when they were new, but this is one. Up there with the original Jak and Daxter in the I've been wrong 2 times in 25 years game category. That is, if I had a time machine and could play and enjoy games when they were brand new, I'd do it for Cult of the lamb and Jak.

Who knows. In 10 years when I'm too old for fun games, I may turn around and say blaaatro is a good game, but for the moment, it sucks ass!
