The SSX games are always appearing on lists of games that players want to see make a return, which makes it all the more confusing that EA hasn't really done anything with the classic snowboarding series since its 2012 reboot.

In the past, a group of former EA developers, including SSX's creators Steven Rechtschaffner and Larry LaPierre, formed a company called SuperNatural Studios in Canada to work on a spiritual successor to the series, called Project Gravity (which we mistakenly reported earlier this year to be cancelled after being dropped by 2K Games).

However, it's important to note that they aren't the only ones hoping to pick up where the classic snowboarding games left off, with an Austin-based indie developer named Nathan Dearth currently in the process of building their own SSX successor named Tricky Madness, which is due out for PC in Q4 2025.

Tricky Madness, according to its Steam page, is inspired by "classics like SSX and 1080" and will feature a trick meter, combos, and Uber Tricks, as well as a voiced in-game DJ, 8 handcrafted maps, and a dedicated campaign.

Back in February, Dearth tried to crowdfund the project's development on Kickstarter but unfortunately failed to raise half of his £3990 goal. Despite that, he's continued working on the game ever since, releasing new demos on Itch as well as updates on social media, to inform people of how it's coming along and get feedback from players.

From what we've seen so far, it's shaping up rather nicely, nailing some of the essentials of what made the SSX games so fun to play in the first place. However, we do hope there's a little more effort made to establish its own visual identity in the future to help it stand on its own two feet.

OMG, that music effect is AWFUL. I know what it’s trying to do, but holy hell that fade out/in does not work with that type of music.

Too janky.
The movement seems all wrong and it looks like the boards are going down a white concrete hill.
I want to be in the lead and serpentine so I can ruin the snow for the people behind me!

And honestly, at this point in gaming history, we should have snowboard games with individual snowflakes and various overnight weather conditions that affect snow depths.

And can the devs provide an example of how different snow types will affect handling of the boards?
Fresh powder should of course handle differently to hard packed with patches of ice which will of course affect your score differently to sticky slush.

And I hope the devs have already thought about an unlockable tobogganer, skier and snowmobile I can do tricks on.

Agreed. I'm sure that will be changed before release.

I'm going to hold onto hope that this will be good. It won't be the same without run dmc but if it's as fun as Tricky was, I'm sold

Six months later, and the newest trailer somehow makes the game look worse. Even at $8, that’s a nope for me.

I had some money in my steam wallet so I gave it a go. It's rough. It doesn't even feel like early access. I refunded it. I just checked how long I played for, it was 2 minutes.

2 minutes is the amount of time it takes a PS1 to load cool boarders 2 and get into a game...
Your playtime alone is the most scathing review anyone could offer.

Maybe in a couple years it might be good, but right now it wasn't worth the $11 or whatever I spent. I wasn't entirely sober at the time, but that doesn't change my review

The Steam reviews are all the same: it’s not good now, but it could be in the future! It also sounds like there’s about 10 minutes worth of content at the moment, so I honestly think they should have let this cook longer before dropping it.

It's an Early Access game, so it's still a fair way from being completed.

There's early access, then there's "this should have been a demo"
