The Virtual Reality Thread

Post by Calavera »

This is a thread where you can talk about what you have been playing in VR. Post news about upcoming VR games or VR news in general.

I mainly wanted to create this thread just so I could have a place to ramble on when I try an interesting piece of VR software. :olol:

This time I want to mention 2 kind of odd/unique programs both involving emulation. The first being 3dsen. A VR NES emulator.

You may remember awhile back an NES emulator was released that made NES games into 3D. This combines that with VR is it is very cool. I've mostly played Contra and Mario 3. If you have a VR headset and are a fan of the NES at all I highly recommend you check it out. The downside is that not every game is "compatible". Any game will run but it needs a custom profile for all the 3D stuff to show properly. I tried loading Darkwing Duck using the Ducktales profile and while it loaded the 3D elements were all off. I think there are currently 84 compatible games.

Next is an even more impressive VR emulator. Dolphin VR.

I was VERY impressed with this. Of course it isn't going to work perfectly with every game but the games it does work good with is pretty amazing. I've only tried a few so far. First I tried Sonic Adventure 2 and wow. It is really impressive how Dolphin VR can take such an old game and make it into a decent VR experience. One part I found pretty interesting is during the first stage where the semi is chasing you down the hill while you run towards the camera you can actually look the other way and see where you are going.

Next I tried Monkey Target 2 in Super Monkey Ball 2 and it worked great. Really impressive. I know my thoughts on these are just "wow, cool" but it is hard to describe unless you try it yourself. Again if you have a VR headset this is one piece of software that you MUST try!

If a SNES VR emu comes out, you can play Lawnmower Man in VR.

What we really need is Dreamcast VR. Floigan Bros VR!!!!

About DolphinVR I tried Skies of Arcadia with it and sadly it didn't work great. Hopefully someday they will get it tuned to work good in VR. I LOVE Skies of Arcadia and would have an absolute blast playing it in VR!

Back when I still had a 3D TV, I played Mario Galaxy in 3D. It looked amazing but didn’t run well because it was a brand new feature back then. I never considered using my VR headset to try it again.

I would love if they would make VR emulators for classic systems. I'm mostly talking about PS1 and beyond as it would be harder for 2D games. I want to play Starfox 64 in VR!

If they had good VR emulators for N64,Dreamcast,PS2,Gamecube and Wii I'd probably get a lot more use out of my headset. I know I was going on about Dolphin VR in an earlier post It is OK but the majority of games don't work well with it. It hasn't been updated since 2016 which is a shame. It could be an amazing VR emulator with some more work.

It seems I'm just not that big into most of the kind of VR games that are out there. I do still need to try Half Life Alyx and see how I like that. But for the most part I enjoy the arcade type games the most. Games like Beat Saber,Polybius,Pinball FX2 and Pistol Whip. I'd say my favorite VR game is Rez Infinite. It is awesome in VR! I'm sure they are more VR games out there that I'd enjoy it is just hard to find that good ones since there are a lot of trash ones.

I would like to try some more VR "experiences" over games. I'd like one where you could walk through an old mansion and just explore the rooms. Stuff like that. Or visiting famous places in VR. I feel like currently VR is still kind of gimmicky. What sucks about it is how you get used to it. When you first try it and do something like the plank game you actually feel like you are standing on top of a building and it throws off your balance and stuff. But after awhile you lose that and are totally used to it. I've had my Quest 2 for around 2 years now I think and I really haven't used it all that much. It is something I'll break out every now and again to mess with but then sit it aside for several months. For the most part I'd rather just play on a TV than a headset. I couldn't imagine using it as my primary form of gaming.

I feel like it is similar with most people. They try it out at a friend's house and think WOW this is amazing! I've got to get one of these! Then once they get it they play with it for a few weeks or so and then it just sits unused. Kind of like people did with the Wii back in the day. They got one and play the shit out of Wii Sports/Resort then never bought any more games for it and it sat unused. At least with the Wii everyone could join in and play together. With VR it is kind of a solo experience.

I'm not hating on VR, it is fun every now and again it just isn't as amazing as I'd hoped it would be by this point in time. I'm sure in the future it will be amazing but I barely care about games now! Will I even care if an awesome VR headset comes out in 2037?

Played some OriginalDoomVR, it was pretty dope lol. If they could just make all the old games I keep playing over and over into VR I'd never take it off! What I'd love to see is Bioforge in VR. It wouldn't be possible without rewriting the game but if they ever did a remake of Bioforge in VR. Oh man, that might just be my ultimate VR!

Anyone here playing any VR lately?

No VR since the PlayStation VR what feels like a lifetime ago.

I was going to play half life Alyx.. but then I thought: it's like $1500 to get an index here, and $5000 of computer to use it properly, I'd need to build a second story on the house for a room to play in properly and then I'd need to stop the real world from happening so I could play...

If Alyx came out 10-15 years ago, I might have kept up with the VR fad and expense... Now I have so many other things I can spend money on, and many other things to play that don't need me to have shit I'll use for 10 hours and then get bored of and never touch again.

VR is a gimmick that just will never die, like 3D movies.
It's always just 10 more years from being THE BEST THING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD, and people have been saying that since the 50's (for both technologies)
I'm sorry, it's been 70 fucking years and 3D movies and VR are still tacky gimmicks.

I can understand why people like the thought of it all though. The real world is shit, a virtual world could fix everything, but it's never going to.
