PlayStation history timeline website opened; PS2 sales top 160 million

Take a trip down memory lane.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has opened a PlayStation history timeline website in celebration of the console's 30th anniversary approaching on December 3, featuring various information and statistics spanning each generation of PlayStation.

The website also confirms that PlayStation 2 has sold over 160 million units, which former Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan stated during an episode of the Official PlayStation Podcast in March, but was not reflected on any official website, including Sony Interactive Entertainment's own "Business Data Sales" page, which still lists the console as selling 155 million.

The sales numbers shared on the 30th anniversary website are as follows:
  • PlayStation – 102 million (from 1994 to 2006)
  • PlayStation 2 – 160 million (since 2000)
  • PlayStation 3 – 87 million (since 2006)
  • PlayStation 4 – 117 million (since 2013)
Visit the PlayStation history timeline website for more.

They actually have trouble tracking the 4 digits the PSP
sold in, the double digits that the Vita sold in and the between 3 and 7 units that the PS1 classic sold.

PSP sold over 80 million. It sold more than the 3DS.

Don't come in here with your facts and statistics. I was having quite a fun time with my hyperbole. (I love the PSP, but it never sold as well as it should have)

Also, you didn't dispute the numbers for the Vita or the classic? I guess the sales figures on those systems are simply how many you own. :olol:

15m for the Vita, so you were close enough there.

The Classic sold OK-ish after the heavy, heavy discount.

Nah man, the PS1 Classic sold very well.

…at the $20 price point. Once it was competitive with the AtGames Genesis and Atari Flashback, it sold through its remaining stock pretty quick. Otherwise I’m sure they would have been buried next to ET.

Honestly, if I saw one for 20AUD I'd buy it, but I'm sure they all ended up next to ET before they got that cheap.

If I was a collector, I would absolutely buy one now and hoard it for 50 years because I think they'll be worth quite a bit one day (all the unpopular toys from history go for more than the successful ones, simply because no one cared enough to save them so only like 5 of any given unpopular thing still exists) and people won't have kept them like their limited edition PS3's 4's and 5's. They'd have bought one, realised it was shit, and gotten rid of it. :olol:

I don't think the NES or SNES mini will ever be worth a lot simply because there are millions of them. and the AT games systems will never be worth a lot because they were total garbage... But the PS1 CLASSIC? it's only half garbage you can make better, and there's only gotta be like 10 left now, so in 50 years it'll be worth a bit compared to the PlayStations that sell well.
