Re: The Music Charts Thread
I like 25 songs in that top 40.
Everybody Wants to Rule The World
Axel F
Things Can Only Get Better
Sussudio
In My House
Everything She Wants
Angel
Walking On Sunshine
Raspberry Beret
A View To A Kill
Fresh
Would I Lie To You
Never Ending Story
Don't You (Forget About Me)
Voices Carry
Smooth Operator
The Goonies 'R" Good Enough
Everytime You Go Away
Crazy In The Night
Glory Days
Say You're Wrong
Crazy For You
If You Love Somebody Set Them Free
One Night In Bankok
Some Like It Hot
That's a pretty good Spotify playlist right there.
There's 9 songs in the chart I haven't heard. And the other 6 songs I have heard I don't hate.

This was about 3 months before nu metal took over for the next 4 or 5 years. Creed and Matchbox 20 were the only bands of the new ones on the chart who continued having hits. Most because they didn't do a good follow up, but Third Eye Blind did (actually Blue is arguably better) and it still unfortunately flopped.

I got sick of nu metal real quick after Korn so I'm really nostalgic for this last wave of alternative. I was checked out until The White Stripes, Strokes, Jet and Darkness came around.
Thinking of The Strokes just unlocked a memory: I couldn't find Room on Fire anywhere on Limewire. The only file available was the same :30 clip of Reptilia and I got so mad. That must've been around when BitTorrent took off and I never looked back.
But anyway, Flagpole Sitta was a big deal for me because a little-known compilation album came out in October. (I still think Say You'll Be There by the Spice Girls needs more recognition)

It still gets plenty of airplay in Australia, even though it only got to number 12 here, making it SG's third lowest charting hit.pixel wrote: Sun Jul 16, 2023 1:39 am I still think Say You'll Be There by the Spice Girls needs more recognition
It's actually probably the song that still gets played the most by them on radio, with Who Do You Think You Are being 2nd, with that song being their equal 2nd lowest charting single (due to it being a double A side with Mama) at number 13.

100% the best Spice Girls song. I hated Wannabe, but Say You'll Be There was a great pop song.pixel wrote: Sun Jul 16, 2023 1:39 am I got sick of nu metal real quick after Korn so I'm really nostalgic for this last wave of alternative. Yeah, that end of the alternative era in 1997-98 was a strange time when nobody knew what to do so they tried out everything. They tried playing straight EDM (or "electronica" as it was called then), then they tried rock bands collaborating with EDM artists like the Spawn soundtrack, then they just played Prodigy since stuff like Breathe wasn't dissimilar to Nine Inch Nails. You had the end of the grunge wannabes where only Creed survived. They tried ska for a minute and only No Doubt went anywhere (well, Sublime too but that was their last record obviously.) Then swing music got a few months with Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Squirrel Nut Zippers. Then they just kind of settled on the bands on that chart at the end before Korn got big and brought in Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock., which kind of ended with Nickelback.
And FM radio rock is at a weird place again now where they're playing country songs and the new Lil Uzi Vert because he made a nu metal sounding rap album.

I always forget there was a period there where SKA was gonna conquer the entire world... And then faster than it came, it fizzled out of favour for literally every single other genre of music to have ever existed.
Just don't tell the hardcore punks that ska is basically the same as punk but with more trumpets and less anger or the true punks will glass you!

The Beatles - Now And Then
UK #1
Australia #6
In the UK album charts, in week 2, Duran Duran dropped down to 79 and OMD dropped out of the top 100. They are at number 15 & 16 on the actual album sales charts (no streams) still though.

Wham and Mariah are already in the UK top 40 with their Xmas songs. They're entering earlier every year.

Has there ever been a worse top 10?
It's at 7 on the Billboard charts.

Ugh, that's a rough chart. I don't think I'm going to have any nostalgia for 2020s pop music in the future.

Re: The Music Charts Thread
It's gotta be way up there on the worst list
There were some real duds in 2006 and 2010-2015.
The years around 2006 were bad because rock was dominated by Hinder and Buckcherry. All those dopey Snow Patrol/Coldplay bands were making sad music. Pop music sucked too.
2010-2015 had all those bad gimmicky Dr. Luke pop derivatives from people like Katy Perry and Ke$ha. LMFAO and all that crap too.
The mid-70s has some awful pop music too.

lol I forgot about Hinder. That Lips Of An Angel song was the goddamn worst, trying to write a Poison power ballad and sucking at it. It made Nickelback look like geniuses.
This was the #1 song in the end of the year Billboard 2006 chart

We were watching 00s rock music videos a while ago and stumbled upon Hinder. It's worse than you can imagine

There was that, the few survivors of nu metal (basically just Linkin Park and Korn) and Emo that year. I was watching Fuse because MTV2 (which was amazing 1996-2002) had stopped playing many videos. It was a dark time besides White Stripes and Radiohead. I loved the first Strokes album but didn't like Room On Fire, but Elephant was better than White Blood Cells.

A few months late replying
just saw the talk about "Say You'll Be There" It's definitely their best song, Jon B got a songwriting credit as it has similarities to a song he wrote for After 7.
