Now it would take place in 2011! The arcade would have games like H2Overdrive, Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 3 and Sega Racing Classic!
It still amazes me how in 2000 (Shenmue) and 2002 (Vice City) The 80s seems like such a long time ago. Not only that but it was basically a different world in the 16 years from 1986 to 2002. Compare that to 16 years ago now which would be 2008 and things weren't really that different. Smartphones were already out just nowhere near as popular as they are now. You probably visited the same websites in 2008 that you are still viewing in 2024. Google,Youtube,Twitter,Reddit etc..
A game from 1986 and 2002 is no comparison. It'd be like which game looks better Kid Icarus or Mafia? While a game from 2008 doesn't look as good as a new 2024 game it really doesn't look THAT drastically different. To be clear I'm not saying graphics haven't improved since 2008, they have but where a 1986 game in 2002 would seem really old and dated. Playing something like GTA4, Fallout 3, Saints Row 2 or GRID in 2024 doesn't seem super old and outdated like an 1986 game would be in 2002.
Back then just a few years could make a HUGE difference. The SNES came out in 1991 and had really good graphics for the time far better than the NES could ever do. Only 5 years later the N64 was released with Mario 64. A fully 3D Mario game that would have been unheard of back in 1991. 4 years after Mario 64 Shenmue comes out and the graphics were mindblowing at the time. That is 3 major console upgrades in just 9 years.
So in 1996-1997 the 5-6 year old SNES would be looking pretty outdated if you had an N64. What does a 5-6 year old game look like now? and Forza Horizon 4 and Dirt 4. This could just be me being outdated but I think they look basically just as good as a 2024 game. Then what about N64 to Dreamcast, not as huge as a different from SNES to N64 but still a decent jump in those 3-4 years. A 3-4 year old game now would be Forza Horizon 5 and Dirt 5. (It just so happened the released dates for FH4,FH5 and Dirt 4 and 5 lined up) I doubt anyone would say either of those games look dated and old.
Take the PS5 for example. Is there any game for the PS5 that totally blows away what the PS4 could do? I've watched some comparisons of the two and they don't look that different to me. They are going for things like higher resolution and frame rates with higher refresh displays. The graphics don't really look any better just maybe a bit clearer. Have we reached a point where graphics can't really get all that much better than they currently are?
I realize I've talked about this exact topic several times on here before but it is interesting to me. How at one time 10 years was a huge change in the world and now 10 years ago really is no different than today. Honestly what was so different in 2014 compared to 2024? What major things can you do in 2024 that you couldn't do in 2014?

I still haven't played1,2 or 3 on steam and I've had them installed for ages.
10 years is a huge amount of time, people just got greedy. Why make things better? Just sell any old shit to people who won't notice or care.
Same thing happened in games and technology. It stagnated. Monitor resolutions are the one that really gets me...
I have a monitor from 1995 that has 640 by 480. I have a monitor from 2005 that has 1920 by 1200. I have a monitor from 2015 that has 3840 by 2160..
Why in the fuck will people be selling full HD displays in 2025 some 20 years after full HD was relevant?
Because people don't care and will buy them.
Humanity has peaked. No where to go but either down hill or stay exactly the same but costing more.
Adjusted for inflation and taking into account all the monitors costs... 2005 was the best time to buy a monitor, followed by 2015.
