Yes, Al Jean, who wrote it, said it was his idea to ask FXX to pull it from being shown on the network and their Simpsons World app (which I guess is over soon.) He claimed while watching Leaving Neverland he started thinking Jackson used the episode to lure boys back when Bart was popular with all boys in the early 90s.

I think he defended Apu in the same interview where he said he's sorry if Indians were taunted by being called Apu by bullies but they have good intentions with the character so none of the writers feel he's racist.
