I think they have til March 29th to sort this Brexit mess out. The stories using stealth scare tactics (mixed in with patriotic hyperbole which in turn was fueling xenophobic attitudes against immigrants, many who have a legal right to UK citizenship) to get people to vote leave has backfired massively. If the UK are booted out of the EU with no deal in place I can't look beyond putting the blame solely on the Conservative government. Cameron set the whole ball rolling and bailed out. They say Labour left a note in the Treasury saying they spent all the money but what the Tories are potentially doing is much, much worse. Since the UK doesn't have any real valuable exports, the Tories again shut down the shipping, mining, majority of factories etc so again it's essentially their fault.
MPs have voted by 412 to 202 for Prime Minister Theresa May to ask the EU for a delay to Brexit.
It means the UK may not now leave on 29 March as previously planned.
Mrs May says Brexit could be delayed by three months, to 30 June, if MPs back her withdrawal deal in a vote next week.
If they reject her deal again then she says she will seek a longer extension - but any delay has to be agreed by the 27 other EU member states.
I really don’t understand the nuances of Brexit, but my big question is what leverage does the UK even have to beg for extensions or fight for better deals? I mean, the EU doesn’t want them to leave, so what stops them from just saying, ‘nope, either take the deal we gave you, leave with no deal, or just stay in and never bring it up again.’
There's a myriad of issues, but basically we have a split government within a coalition, trying to negotiate a crap deal to keep us in the customs union; because leaving the customs union would be a massive pain in the backside.
One of Theresa May's biggest mistakes was calling for a general election, she was arrogant enough to think that the Tories would win by an absolute landslide, but they only managed to cling on to power by forming a coalition with the DUP (not a good idea), thus significantly weakening their influence.
There's also the fact that both the majority of Scotland and Northern Ireland voted to remain.
True but in fairness to her, it's actually Cameron's mess which she has been left to tidy up. He bailed out when the vote for Brexit came in, so it's all really his fault. The Tories should never had let the general public vote on such an important matter in the first place anyway when they weren't really informed of the full extent of what they were actually voting for. Really they should have overruled the "Leave" vote and stayed in the EU.
Yea no doubt May has made it worse, but what we shouldn't forgot is that David Cameron let the people vote to "leave" or "remain". That's a decision you should never give to the general public without really informing them of the implications of leaving.
He started this whole ball rolling and bailed so he didn't have to deal with the fallout. So yea Teresa May and the Tories have created a huge mess, which I think will take years to tidy up. Plus you have to see whether the EU countries will actually want to do business with us now since they are no doubt pissed off with Mays indecisions. There's no real tangible exports now either as the Tories shut the pits, the shipping yards, factories etc too.
