I'm sure you use better oils and all of that. America is pretty terrible at getting bad ingredients if it cuts costs (see high fructose corn syrup replacing natural sugar.) But it really comes down to "do the employees give a fuck today?" with American fast food.

I went down the rabbit hole with this channel. Even though I knew everything in the one about Telstra, it still pissed me off watching it :olol:

I noticed 711 has Daniels doughnuts now.

What I don't get is how a normal cinnamon doughnut is $3.50 when sitting right next to them is Krispy Kremes. Why the fuck would anyone buy a Daniels cinnamon for the same $3.50 a KK original glaze costs.

When Krispy Kreme arrived here in 2006-2007 odd, they completely decimated everyone in the market.

I struggle to think of any other product that is so vastly superior to all its competitors that if I can't get a Krispy Kreme I simply won't buy a doughnut anymore.
If Coke disappeared tomorrow, I guess I'd get Pepsi, or LA ice or RC anything really.
If any given fast food place disappeared? I guess I'd find an similar alternative no big deal.

But if Krispy Kremes disappeared suddenly, I wouldn't touch donut king, or Daniels, or local bakery, or supermarket ones, I'd simply live without doughnuts in my life entirely.

And it isn't even brand loyalty, if someone these past nearly 20 years could make anything nearly as good, or even something decent for a tenth of the price, I'd swap, but no one seems to be able to manage it.

For me to consider Daniels as good as a Krispy Kreme, they'd need to drop down to maybe 50 cents for a cinnamon or $1 for something fancy then they'd be a decent enough doughnut to compete.

Krispy Kreme...meh. A nice chocolate jam donut from a bakery is better.

In other news, Australian McDonald's have added McWings to the permanent menu. I gave them a try. They are huge, wings on steroids. They are mostly crispy breading, with a bit of meat and a lot of bone underneath. First bite, they seem good. But the more you eat them, the less interesting they become.

They had the wings here (called Mighty Wings) and they didn't flop as bad as McSpaghetti or those onion tots in the 70s, but they didn't last a year IIRC. It was just a bad decision to try to compete with Buffalo Wild Wings and Wing Stop at that point

That damn (ELITE) Super Bowl commercial is tattooed onto my brain:

I don't think anyone cares at KFC, from CEO on down. :olol: I had some tonight and it tastes like corporate has been making the food cheaper/shittier. There's a regional gas station chain that has more consistently good bone-in chicken and tenders.

Krispy Kreme expanded in 2001-2002 around here and it was pretty damn good. They were fresh fried right here in town and shipped them out to gas stations. Quality control was great, everyone was happy. They closed a few years later and the quality got much worse because they shipped them in from hours away.

Yeah, but you don't like Tim Tams, and if we can't trust your opinion on Biscuits, you can't expect anyone to take your incorrect opinion on something as important as doughnuts seriously. :owink:

The quality is just consistent whether it's a supermarket, servo (gas station), or one of their stores, and they have enough stores around the place that you can get a nice one. They are so much better when they're fresh...

Although to be honest, a week old, stale refrigerated Krispy Kreme done for 8 seconds in the microwave still tastes better and more fresh than most of the other options directly from the oven.
It's like all the other doughnuts are made with the staleness baked/fried in somehow...

Also, fuck Macca's and their mcwings!
Bring back the god damn McMozzarella Mcsticks and the Mc Potato Cakes you cowards!
I want a McDimsim too while I wait for the good menu items to come back.

The mozzarella sticks were good, but you can just get the frozen ones from Woolies. Cheaper, just as good.

Their potato cakes (or whatever incorrect name they called them) were average.

:olol:

The problem with most places that sell potato cakes is their opening hours. Indeed the problem with most places in the country is their stupid hours. And the point of fast food is that I'm too lazy to cook!

I'm sick at the moment so I can't even be bothered ordering pizza because I'll have to go to the door to get it, and you want me to shop for, and cook, and clean up after supermarket McMozzarella sticks?
Nah.

Also, you bringing up the incorrect naming of potato cakes has made me notice the creep of naming things incorrectly is setting in.. it's a fucking Parma, and some places have started spelling and pronouncing it wrong...
I do wonder if people who call them Potato scallops, and Parmis also call Servos Servi's and they don't have a smoko, they go on a smoki.

Order some shit + mozzarella sticks from Woolies via Uber Eats or Menulog. Stick them in an air fryer for 10 minutes. Eat. Pretty easy.

They are 10 for $5.50, although they might cost more to get them delivered that way. Order a few boxes so you can have some another day, or night.

They also have potato cakes, but I haven't tried those.

There was a phase where schoolkids around here were selling krispy kreme donuts as a fundraiser. They'd bring them straight from Omaha (2 1/2 hours away) and sell them by the box in parking lots. Keep the whole box in a freezer and you don't even have to thaw them. We'd take them straight out and eat them frozen

My donut tastes have changed. I like a good fried cake donut now with butterscotch frosting. Those are best with a hot coffee and a cigarette on a crisp fall morning. And honestly, the convenience stores around here (Casey's, Kwik Trip) have better junk food than fast food places these days. Casey's has the best donuts over the local guys. I think it's a competition thing. No one's coming after KFC so they're slowly dying from corporate malaise. Meanwhile, the convenience store wars are very cutthroat and each chain is trying to outclass the others.

If you get up early enough here (around 5:30) you can buy them minutes out of the oven and the fresh glazed ones are better than sex
