Final Fantasy IX Remake Is Happening, Confirms Leaker, Unlike FFX

It's been nearly three years since the memorable GeForce NOW leak confirmed the existence of a Final Fantasy IX Remake. While most of the games included in NVIDIA's list ended up being announced, some of them never were.

This includes the remake of the ninth mainline entry in Square Enix's Final Fantasy series. However, rumors have persisted despite the lack of any official announcement. In early June 2023, a leaker on ResetEra suggested Final Fantasy IX Remake would be a PlayStation exclusive featuring traditional gameplay instead of the action combat used for the Final Fantasy VII Remake. That same leaker said the game was almost ready to be released and would sport updated models and prettier graphics, although it was not a big-budget remake like Final Fantasy VII. Around two months ago, another leaker added that he heard the same - it will be a faithful remake with a relatively modest budget.

Yesterday, leaked Midori joined the chorus, confirming that Final Fantasy IX Remake is indeed in development at Square Enix. However, the Final Fantasy X Remake is not, at least for now.

Midori first gained credit as a SEGA leaker, but recently also talked about Nintendo possibly making a new version of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild for the upcoming Switch 2 console. This is the first time Midori provided a Square Enix leak.

As a reminder, Final Fantasy IX originally launched in 2000 for Sony's PlayStation 2 console. It returned the franchise to a medieval setting called Gaia, following the futuristic worlds seen in the previous installments. In the story, players follow a thief named Zidane Tribal, who kidnaps Princess Garnet Til Alexandros XVII as part of a ploy by the neighboring nation of Lindblum. He joins Garnet and a growing cast of characters on a quest to bring down her mother, Queen Brahne of Alexandria, who started the war.

The Final Fantasy IX Remake could debut at the next PlayStation Showcase, which is expected to air sometime next week.

Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition Is Up for Preorder

Definitive versions of six all-time classics.

It took a while, but you can finally preorder the Final Fantasy Pixel Remastered games physical form. Final Fantasy I-VI Collection Anniversary Edition is set to release October 8 for Switch and PS4 (don't worry, you can play the PS4 version on PS5 just fine). It costs a hefty $74.99, but it does collect souped-up versions of the first six mainline Final Fantasy games. It also comes with a sticker sheet, so that's something.

As a pack-in bonus for everyone who picks up this collection, you'll get a sticker sheet. It includes 12 circular stickers featuring delightful sprite art of characters from the games. There's a black mage, a moogle, Terra, Kane, and even one of Kefka on his back laughing his unforgettable laugh.

What's Included in Final Fantasy I-VI Collection?

The collection contains the pixel remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games. Rather than doing a major artistic revamp like Square Enix has done for some of these games in the past, the art in these editions is tastefully updated to look good on modern displays. It retains the pixelated look, but it's visually cleaner, and it looks great whether you're playing on a giant TV or in handheld mode.

The soundtracks have gotten orchestral upgrades, with the new versions overseen by the original composer Nobuo Uematsu. They've also ironed out some of the quirks of the originals and rebalanced the difficulty and added quality-of-life options to turn off random encounters and bump up experience and gil earned. Overall, there's not a lot to complain about.

I'll wait to get this collection when they release the 7-X 2 and complete the collection of every final fantasy game!
Nothing after X 2 counts.

But before they release that collection they have to remake 7 by itself 83 more times.

Final Fantasy 16 has arrived on PC - and let's just say that it's a demanding game. Built with dynamic resolution scaling in mind on PS5-class hardware, it's a port that pushes PC hard if you stick to fixed resolutions. Alex and Oliver share notes on the game, then move onto the optimised settings and PS5 equivalents put together by contributor Mohammed Rayan.

I already have it on PS5, but I never played it. I’m thinking of getting it on PC, though, because it would be a lot easier to play at night in bed instead of using Remote Play from my PS5 to my PC.
