This is one of those times where I almost feel better not knowing the truth. I'm going to be pissed off every time I buy glasses now.

I don't wear glasses (yet) but when Specsavers and OPSM run ads in Australia they usually have sales that are 2 pairs for $100 or something like that, so I guess we don't get screwed as much here.

I had some major headaches about 18 months ago and one of the things they wanted to rule out was if it was caused by my vision. Specsavers were offering glasses fairly cheaply and were pushing me to get them when I had some tests done. I didn't bother getting them but they send me emails every few months with more deals. I think it gets even cheaper because of my private health cover. It's amazing how badly Americans get screwed sometimes.

When you buy glasses they always try and add additional things on top - scratch resistant coating, certain lenses, react to light lenses, tints, special cleaning cloths and all other stuff. If you have to have varifocals it can get expensive depending on the type of frame you have because sometimes they have to adapt/shave down the lenses to fit. So glasses can be expensive and they even do designer brands now. I mean, you can get ones which look like the designer ones at the discount prices (but without the logo(s) although same/similar design). I think the optician recommended I get an eye test every year (it's usually 2 years) as I too get really bad migraine type headaches and also get weird vision problems like seeing a gold/circular disc in my left eye sometimes. I also have like darkened vision where things appear more dark than they are. I'd rather wear contacts but I have that dry eye thing so I don't think I'd be able to wear them comfortably and I wouldn't ever consider laser eye surgery because it might go wrong.
