Liam Gallagher’s First Interview in 3 Years Is Everything You Want It to Be

The new Liam is running seven miles a day, climbing trees for fun, side-eyeing Noel and Damon Albarn, and writing “fucking funny” new songs, apparently

Liam Gallagher is a changed man: Since his last interviews, in mid-2013, the former Oasis singer says he has taken up a rigorous exercise routine (“I run around seven miles every day”), explored far-flung corners of London (“I’ve been to Dalston, man”), written some “fucking funny” new songs (“It’s not Pink Floyd and it ain’t Radiohead”)‚ and embarked on a “wonky life [that’s] going to make for better music.” (In other ways, he remains fiercely on brand: “Lots of people say I need to chill out about Noel. Not until they stop Twitter. That cunt will always get it from me.”) All of this comes from a new interview, published in today’s issue of Q magazine. Liam also says new music is coming next year. Read a few quotes below.

On his latest hobby:

"Climb the odd tree too. Climbed one the other day. I was running on the Heath and I thought, ‘That looks like a nice tree, I’m going to climb that f*cking tree.’ Climbed it and sat there with my hood up for about 10 minutes."

On Noel Gallagher’s high-flying new lifestyle:

"Whatever next? Robbie Williams turning up on his next record? I’d have to send the police round. Put it this way, Noel lives in a £17million house. That changes you, I reckon. You have appropriate furniture, appropriate kitchens, appropriate red wine that Bono’s recommended. And Damon Albarn becomes your mate. Fair dos, but not for me."

On sharing a street with the UK’s leading celebrity chef:

"Jamie Oliver lives up the road. I got told off for throwing stones at his windows pissed-up, asking him to chuck down some bacon rolls."

On his new music:

"There are just 10, 11 songs I’ve written that are eligible to be recorded. They’ve got flair, attitude, the melodies are sick and the words are f*cking funny. ... It’s a record written by me, that’s got all the right ingredients and sounds well tasty. You won’t be scratching your chin. It’s not Pink Floyd and it ain’t Radiohead. It’s chin-out music."

I have hopes for the Liam solo record. The last Beady Eye record was great, even though it bombed so bad few people heard it (it was produced by Dave Sitek so it sounded like Liam singing on TV on the Radio songs, which is awesome even with his shot voice.) And probably the best vocals he ever did was for the Death In Vegas Scorpio Rising song. So prime Liam after Be Here Now is stuff without Noel. And maybe wanting to show up Noel's mediocre solo stuff (I didn't even bother going to see High Flying Birds when they came to DC, but I saw BE both times they came here.) He certainly needs it, since he's known as "Remember that one guy who acted like a dickhead in that British band Americans liked for 2 years that time?" here.

I'd like to see Liam do like a John Lennon-esque 'Imagine' type record. But he'd have to work with the right producer(s) and find the right material. He could embrace his volatileness and use that as fuel for a record or do a 180% and make an introspect type album where he's reflecting on his past and changing his ways. But I see more emphasis on the former rather than the latter. Also musical trends have changed so most major label(s) would put him with like a of the moment producer and try and update their sound. I also think guys like Ed Sheeran are more consumable for today's audiences since if you book him for a TV show or an awards show etc. he's likely to turn up and be graceful. Whereas Liam is really a throwback to the old rock star ethos. Personally I think today's music industry doesn't really have many if any real true rock stars now apart from the old school guys & girls. So somebody with real star quality would be super successful I think.

Yeah, it was Noel pulling the better Oasis songs he wrote like Born on a Different Cloud and Love Like a Bomb out of him, the first Beady Eye with no real direction was forgettable, and Dave Sitek pulled the second one out of him (plus it was clear Andy Bell wrote a lot of it since a few songs sounded like modern Ride.) I don't know who that producer would be. Maybe Mark Ronson in a sane Phil Spector role if Liam hadn't been insulting him for a decade.
